Administrator/User Problem

G

Guest

I have been using my new computer for a few months and never bothered to make
a new user, so I was simply logged on as "Administrator." Recently, a new
User was created by a friend of mine, and now I automatically log on as the
New User. I would like to delete this user, but both this user and
Administrator are listed as "Computer Administrators" in the User Accounts
menu (which won't allow me to delete it, because the New user is a Computer
Administrators).

Any help would be great!

Log off, then log on as administrator so that you can delete the
unwanted user.

To log on without having to enter the password each time, click
Start / Run / control userpasserwords2. Now untick the box that
requires users to enter a password each time.

Yeah, I tried that, but the "unwanted user" is also listed as an
Administrator, and when I try to make it a Limited User it won't let me.

Right now I have 2 Computer Administrators, and the Control Panel won't let
me make either of them limited.

When you log on as the main administrator then you can
delete any user account other than administrator. There
is no need to demote it first.

A quick way to delete an account goes like this:
1. Click Start / Run / cmd {OK}
2. Type these commands:
net user {Enter} (to see all account names)
net user xxx /del {Enter} (to delete account xxx)

No luck!

I did what you said, cmd>net user>net user NAME /del but it didn't work.
When I type the name of the user (which is "The Gibson") in it says "This
user name cannot be found."

When I enter "net user" it lists "The Gibson" as a user, but it says it
doesn't exist after I enter it in the cmd.

I suspect your registry is corrupted. I also suspect that you
can no longer log on as "The Gibson". If so, live with it, as
it will not interfere with your PC's operation. Treat it like
a wart!

Well, I can log in as The Gibson, but I can't log in as Administrator (which
contains all my files and programs) unless I go back to the old windows 'type
in your user name' thing. Oh well

Let's do some solid diagnostics:
- Click start / run / cmd {OK}
- Type these commands:
set > c:\users.txt
dir "%allusersprofile%\.." >> c:\users.txt
net user >> c:\users.txt
net user administrator >> c:\users.txt
net user "The Gibson" >> c:\users.txt
notepad c:\users.txt
- Paste the contents of this file into your reply.

Fine. Your diagnostic report tells me this:
- You are currently logged on as "administrator".
- You have two non-system accounts: "administrator", "the gibson".
- Each account as an account profile.
- Both accounts have administrative privileges.

Now let's see what happens when you delete the unwanted account:
- Log on as administrator
- Click Start / Run / cmd {ok}
- Type these commands verbatim:
net user %UserName% > c:\test.txt
net user "the gibson" /del 1>>c:\test.txt 2>>&1 {Enter}
net user "the gibson" /active:no 1>>c:\test.txt 2>>&1 {Enter}
net user "the gibson" >> c:\test.txt {Enter}
net user >> c:\test.txt {Enter}
notepad c:\test.txt {Enter}

Paste the result into your reply. If this does not work, reboot
the machine and run through the whole sequence again. If this
does not work then I'll tell you how to use a more powerful
account.

Looks like you figured it out! I not longer see "The Gibson" in the User
Profiles page. Seriously, thanks a ton for taking the time to solve my
problem.
