Administrative Shares

I am logged in as Administrator on two networked PCs:
- PC1: WinXP
- PC2: Win2000

On the WinXP, I can see its own administrative shares
(C$, D$). On the Win2000 PC, I am unable to access
the WinXP administrative shares - WinXP rejects the
password for "Administrator", even though it is the same
on both machines.

However, I can access any other WinXP share from the
Win2000 machine.

What do I need to do to make the administrative shares
accessible to other machines?

Don't know if you are using XP Pro or not, I can only comment on XP Pro. You
possibly may be trying to authenticate as a guest. If you look at Computer
Management/shares sessions when you are connected to another share it will tell
you what user you are authenticated as. If it is guest then you may need to
disable simple file sharing and then look at Local Security Policy/security
settings/local policies/security options for network access:sharing a and
security model for local accounts to make sure it is set to "classic". ---

Thanks for your reply.

I'm using XP Pro. I tried your suggestions, with no success.
I then did this:
1. Create a share "C" on XP, restricted to Administrators.
2. Tried to access "C$" from Win2000, without success.
3. Tried to access "C" from Win2000 - worked OK.
4. Tried to access "C$" from Win2000 - worked OK.
5. Tried to access "C$" from some other Win2000 PC - worked OK.
6. Rebooted all machines, then tried to access "C$" from some
other Win2000 PC - worked OK.

It seems that XP Pro needs to have its head knocked about
before it comes to its senses. I'll keep an eye on this one - no
doubt I will stumble over it again.

Have you turned off WinXP's Simplified File Sharing?
