Hi Landon,

What type of the account you're logging on with please?
Is it *the* Administrator account or *an* Administrator account?

Hello folks,

I too am experienceing this problem. I have XP Home on my system. My
situation involves trying to run Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 "Century of
Flight."

I only have the one user account on my system and this account has all
rights and privileges. As far as I know, this account is THE administrator's
account.

Here is my situation: As long as I have XP Home with SP1 installed on my
system, I can run FS9 (2004) with no problems. As soon as I install SP2, FS9
will not run and I am given the error dialog box. "Please log on with
Adiminstrator privileges and try again." I have even tried doing a safe boot
and logging in as "administrator" and it still fails with this error message.
I have tried clean booting, and several other possibilities.

The only thing I can figure is that the security "enhancements" of SP2 are
setting an option I am not aware of.

I have called MS Support and had both a games specialist and an XP
specialist on the phone in a 3 way conversation for 3 hours and nothing was
resolved.

Microsoft has in the tech help offered a "fix" for this problem but not as
it relates to FS9 apparently. I have tried the "fix" several times without
success. This "fix" is to create a new icon on the desktop.

I would appreciate any and all suggestions on fixing this.

Thanks

Hi Ted,

Lets try restoring the ACL permissions on your drive and registry.
CAUTION: Create a system restore point before continuing..

First, download subinacl.msi from Microsoft's Downloads Site:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...56-D8FE-4A91-93CF-ED6985E3927B&displaylang=en

Once installed issue the following commands through a .bat file you'll create in
the newly created C:\Program Files\Windows Resource Kits\Tools folder:

subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=administrators=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=administrators=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=administrators=f
subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=administrators=f

subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=system=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=system=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=system=f
subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=system=f

Jimmy,

Thanks for the reply.

Rather than clutter the forums with why and what for, I thought I'd try to
send you an email and update you on my situation, but your server rejected
it. So I'll clutter the forums with this.

I did everything you said as to downloading the application and installing
it and creating a batch file. I ran the batch file and sat back and waited
while a DOS window popped up and managed to scroll away crazily on my
monitor, then a red bar with some information in it sat there and files were
processed. It took all of 15 to 20 minutes the first time I ran it.

When it was done, I reinstalled the game(s) I am having permissions problems
with and tried to play them. No joy! :(
I thought well maybe the batch file thingie was supposed to write
permissions to the games which were not on my system at the time of the first
running of the batch file, so I reran the batch file and this time it took a
matter of two minutes to do the whole process.

Rebooted and tried the game(s) ... No joy.

Not sure what my problem is. I did not have these issues when I ran XP
Home with SP1, I only have these problems with the SP2 Installation.

I can do anything I want with my system. I can add software, hardware, etc.

As I said on the forums, I only have the one account on this system, and
it's the default administrator/single user account. I do not have to choose
a user to log in when I boot the system, it goes straight to my desktop.

The only thing I can figure, (and this is from someone who has slight
knowledge) is that there are certain security permissions that are now ticked
on with SP2 that were not ticked on with SP1. I just need to find them.

I appreciate your efforts.

Thanks.

Hi Ted,

Your message is not cluttering up the message boards.
It's best to have this information here, as it gets indexed
by search engines and might help others find a solution. :)

Since you only have the one Administrator account, I have
to wonder what would happen if you created a 2nd account
with administrator privileges, and logged in with it to install
the game. You might want to test that in Safe Mode also.

Jimmy, Thanks again for bearing with me here.

I've created several new accounts and tried everyway I can think of to grant
all permissions to these accounts ... No go. :(

As for the safe mode, I've tried launching the game as well from the default
only Admin account, it didn't launch from there either.

Again thanks for your time and patience.

Hi Ted,

I thought for certain that either repairing the ACL on the system
or creating a new Admin account would have resolved the issue.

Have you tried reinstalling Service Pack 2?

Hello Jimmy,

Yes. I've reinstalled SP2 several times. Including twice when I was on the
phone with both the XP tech support and games support personnel from
Microsoft.

The only thing I can do to get MSF9 to function properly on my machine is to
uninstall SP2.

I have however decided that I'd rather run my system with SP2 than have FS9
on my system. So until I can get this figured out I haven't a clue.

Thanks my friend. I'm still open to suggestions.

Hi Ted,

If you have a spare partition, I would try installing a side by side
installation of Windows XP there, and upgrade it to SP2 before
attempting to install the games.

Hello Jimmy.

Sorry so long in replying here but when I got a notice that you responded I
was getting an error trying to log on the site here. Then I pretty much
forgot about it until last night.

I tried again to install and play FS9 - still no joy. HOWEVER! I did find
a trouble shooters guide that suggested I check some attributes in the
"Users" folder under computer management. So away I go ... Lo and behold
when I open the window under computer management and look for the "Users"
folder there isn't one!

If you go back and re-read this you'll find that I'm running a single user
account on my system with administrative privileges, in fact loggin in under
safe boot and trying to run the sim results in the same dialog box with
"Please log on with Administrator Privileges and Try Again!"

Could my problem now be related to a bad install of XP Home?

Hi Ted,

The USERS folder that you were referred to in the troubleshooter
you found is just another method of accessing your user accounts.

We've already ran a complete ACL reset on the installation, and
eliminated any profile issue by creating a new Admin account.

We've also attempted to repair Windows and reinstall SP 2.
Microsoft phone support was also unable to resolve the issue.

The above is the reason for the latest suggestion I offered you:

"Hi Ted,

If you have a spare partition, I would try installing a side by side
installation of Windows XP there, and upgrade it to SP2 before
attempting to install the games.

Jimmy,

Thanks for the reply. As much as I'd love to tell you I had the spare
partition, I'm afraid I'm going to have to tell you I don't. I have a 30 gig
harddrive that is partitioned twice. One for C: and the other D:

My O.S. and Office installations are on C: along with a couple other things.
D: being the bigger of the two partitions has all my other stuff in it and
is almost to the point of going belly up from choking to death.

I guess I'm down to the only other option I have ... and that's a complete
wipe and format of the C: drive and start over again?

Thanks.

Ted

Jimmy,

I just discovered something else that may be relevant to what's wrong. Both
my partitions are set as FAT32 and not NTFS.

Jimmy S.

Hi Ted,

That would hinder your ability to setup NTFS file and folder
permissions for users on your hard drive. If you want to
convert your FAT32 partitions to NTFS however use the
following command: Click START > RUN > CMD and type:
convert C: /fs:ntfs
