Adjusting Color Depth

Hi,

After updating my Nvidia display drivers, my color depth is set to a very
low level.

I have the color depth set to True Color 32-bit. The problem I'm
encountering is
the monitor display is dark (seems like a very low brightness level
setting). I don't have any brightness controls for the monitor. Any advice
on how to correct this dark display problem will be greatly appreciated.

Where did you get the updated driver? If through windows update, you
shouldn't get it from there, only from the device manufacturer's web
site if it's a retail card or the computer vendor's website if it's an
OEM unit or motherboard manufacturer. If this is the case do a driver
rollback.

Hi Rock,

I downloaded the driver from Nvidia. I uninstalled the new driver and
installed the old driver, but the problem persists regardless of which driver
is installed.

Windows also informs me that the color depth is set to a low level. I've
done a google search on this where others have encountered the same problem,
but I found no resolution to the problem.

Check for a Gamma or monitor applet in control Panel or
embedded in the Advanced Tab for Display. If present, it
might allow adjustments to the contrast and brightness.
Otherwise, the monitor and video card (or video card driver)
are incompatible. A lower color depth, e.g., 16-bit, might
be needed, especially if the monitor comes from an older
generation than the video card.

I tried adjusting the brightness, contrast and gamma but none of the changes
I made helped with the depth color...it is still very low. I even tried a
System Restore but the problem persists.

My monitor is a Sony HMD-A400 and my video card is a Nvidia GeForce2 MX.

:

Try the monitor on another system, and try a different working monitor
on your system.

I have only 1 monitor. The monitor was working fine before I updated the
drivers.

Hi Darrell

It sounds as if the monitor and the settings it is capable of are not
being recognised correctly by Windows.

Have you tried re-installing your monitor? i.e. delete from Device
Manager, reboot and let Windows re-detect it.

Usually the default Plug and play Monitor driver is fine, but if you
have or can get the specific driver for your monitor, it would be worth
installing that too.

Hi Nightowl,

I've tried your suggestion by removing the monitor through device manager
and rebooting, but the dark display has not changed. BTW, my monitor does
not have a driver. Any other suggestions?

Darrell, I understand that you have only one monitor but at this point
the way to troubleshoot is:

1. Attach your computer to a different monitor. If the problem follows
you, then you know it is the video card. The video card may be failing
and needs to be replaced.

2. Or attach your monitor to a different computer. If the same problem
appears, the monitor is bad.

If you don't have the hardware necessary to do the swapping out, then
take your computer to a friend's or to a local computer repair shop.

Thanks for everyones help. I tried another monitor on my system and the
monitor worked fine. I connected my monitor back to my system and got the
same dark display...So it appears that my monitor needs servicing or its time
for a new LCD monitor. I think I will have it repaired and go for a new LCD
also.

Thnx again.

Thanks for posting back. It is always hard to troubleshoot and
separating out the coincidence of updating the video drivers made it
even harder. You did a good job and posting the solution like you did
will help others.
