ADF Scanner

I recently purchase and returned a HP ScanJet 5590. I am looking for a
document scanner for under $300.00 I want to scan files into PDF. I do
not need to scan films or anything like that. I'm not sure if I should
just buy an all in one? However I think a scanner only would cause
less problems. Can anyone please help me???

Why did you return the 5590?

I have and am thrilled with a 5490, a two-model predecessor to the 5590
which is substantially similar in many regards (The 5490's ADF doesn't
duplex, but that doesn't matter since Adobe Acrobat itself can duplex
.... scan all the odd (front) pages, flip the entire stack and scan all
the even (back) pages, and acrobat properly interleaves the front and
backs with zero effort by the operator).

In fact, while I am totally satisfied with the 5490, I'm considering
getting a 5590 because I'm not sure that there will be a Vista driver
for the now six-year old 5490. I use the scanner primarily for
documents scanned to PDF files (more than 20,000 pages in the past 4
years), but I do also scan photos, both B&W and color, and occasionally
(but not often) 35mm negatives and slides.

I would not recommend buying an All-in-one. I have several of those,
but the scanning software supplied with them doesn't really give you the
tools to properly adjust exposure for a top quality scan. There may be
exceptions to this, but the ones I've seen just don't have the software
sophistication that I need.

The good side here is that you can buy used 5490's on E-Bay for as
little as $10 to $20. [Note: The 5470 and the 5490 are identical
except that the 5490 has the ADF, which can be purchased separately and
added to a 5470. The ADF for the 5470/5490 is HP model/part number
C9866A. Be sure that the power supply is included, it has to be changed
when the ADF is added.

Thanks fro writting... I had to return the 5590 because the Adobe
Acrobat and scanning driver were not compatible. I would scan a 20 page
document and only 1 page would work. The HP director was the same way.
It was really weird. I was on the phone with HP Tech support for 2
weeks and they kept telling me to uninstall and re-install the HP
Director. Upon web research I just gave up and returned. I felt for
over $300.00 I shouldn't need to keep re-installing every time I wanted
to use the scanner.

Something wrong there, because Acrobat and the HP scanners are most
definitely compatible.
