Address books explanation wanted

Can someone explain the difference between:

-Personal Address Books (.PAB)
-Outlook Address Books
-Contacts (within outlook)
-Windows Address Books (.WAB)

All of my E-Mail contacts are in a .PAB personal address book file that
I've been dragging around for almost a decade, through many versions of
exchange and outlook. I don't understand how the different types of
address books and contact lists "mesh" with each other and outlook, and
would appreciate a good explanation.

The Outlook Address book replaced the Personal Address
book in 2000. You should be able to import the PAB into
the Outlook Address book which stores it's data in the
contacts folder of Outlook. The Windows Address book, is
probably also importable, but I am not sure. In order to
use the contacts folder as your Address book, you will
need to do the aforementioned import, then right click the
contacts folder, select properties. Go to the Outlook
Address Book tab and make sure the check box for "Show
this folder as an E-mail Adress Book is checked." This
should help you out. Moving forward you will no longer be
required to move both the .PST file and the .PAB file
since it will all be stored in the .PST file.

Hope that helps.
