Address book display option problems

Recently I tried to find a friends email address, I tried the last name, I
tried the first name, I can't come up with it. I entered the info again, as
a new contact, but an error message tells me that I already have the
contact in my address book. Somehow, don't ask me how, I bring up the old
contact sheet on the person, and all seems ok to me. file as is like the
rest of my contacts, last name is where it suppose to be, first name the
same, all in the right places. What can be the problem

You failed to mention any relevant information.
Outlook versions, information store, and how you "tried to find" would be a
minimum required to start on your question.
