address book causing quick exit

S

Steve Robertson

Hi there,

We are running Exchange 5.5 with Outlook 2000.

I have a strange problem that one of our users has: If she clicks on the
address book icon Outlook will completely exit with no warnings. I initially
thought it was an Outlook problem on her PC, but when she logs onto another
PC it does the same thing. I've read other newsgroup postings and am now led
to believe that it is a corrupt address book. But I've got no idea how to
fix this. Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,
Steve.

Is she using a roaming profile in Windows? That would explain why she has
the same results on another computer. Try deleting & re-creating her mail
profile.

Also - make sure that she (and all others) have the latest patches/SPs for
Office by going to Office Update....you can see this link on Windows Update
(which you should also run regularly).

If I were she, I'd remove the Outlook Address Book service from my profile,
stop and restart Outlook, and add it back in again. If that didn't work,
I'd create a new mail profile.

Thanks for that.

If I delete the profile, will all her saved emails disappear as well? Or
should I export them first, then import them back to the new profile? Will
that re-create the same problem, or should that fix it?

Thanks again,
Steve.

Shouldn't -

Don't export/import. Where is her mail stored now? If it's the Exchange
mailbox, nothing you do to the profile will make it disappear.
Thanks again,
Steve.

No, they won't disappear. You will need to reconnect the pst ot the new
profile though. http://www.outlook-tips.net/howto/profile.htm

Hi there,

I tried that, but it didn't work.

The error is, if she creates a new message, then clicks on 'To...' which
then opens her 'Outlook Address Book' and then clicks the down arrow to
scroll down the list of contacts an error appears saying outlook has
generated errors and must exit.

What else can I try?

Thanks,
Steve.

Two other remedies that may work:
1. Search for any corrupt addresses in the Contacts Folder
2. Update video drivers

Thanks,

What would a corrupt email address look like?

It's a strange problem, when I click on "Contacts" in the folder tree on the
left, all is ok, I can scroll through the email addresses and open them ok.
But when I click the little address book icon on the toolbar, and try &
scroll through the "Outlook Address Book Contacts", it all goes bad and
Outlook crashes.

Weird.

What do you mean the Contact record?

When I view the addresses via the 'contacts' option in the folder tree, I
can open them all one by one, and they all seem ok. it's just when I go to
send a message, click the 'to' button, change to Outlook address book, then
contacts and try to scroll that it all goes bad. I can scroll no problem
through the global address list, just not this users contacts list, although
all the individual addresses look fine.

If I export the whole outlook as a PST file, delete it in exchange and then
re-import it, would that cure it? Or is there a simplier way?

Thanks,
Steve.

The Contact Record is the Contact Form you see whenever you open a Contact.
If the email address is correct and resolved there, then that is not your
problem.
Exporting to a PST is not likely to solve much. Have you tried just removing
and re-adding the Outlook Address Book Service from this profile?

How do I check the PST file for errors? Is there a utility for this, or some
manual method?

Thanks,
Steve

Hi there,
Have you tried just removing and re-adding the Outlook Address Book
Service from this profile?

Yeah I did try that. Before that Outlook crashed with no warning, now
when it crashes it says 'OUTLOOK.exe has generated errors and will be
closed by Windows'.

Strange.
Steve.

Exporting to a PST is not likely to solve much. Have you tried just
removing and re-adding the Outlook Address Book Service from this
profile?

What do you mean the Contact record?

When I view the addresses via the 'contacts' option in the folder tree,
I can open them all one by one, and they all seem ok. it's just when I
go to send a message, click the 'to' button, change to Outlook address
book, then contacts and try to scroll that it all goes bad. I can
scroll no problem through the global address list, just not this users
contacts list, although all the individual addresses look fine.

If I export the whole outlook as a PST file, delete it in exchange and
then re-import it, would that cure it? Or is there a simplier way?

Thanks,
Steve.

The only time I've seen it work is when the address book crashes at
the very same point while scrolling. Some users report the problem as
being a corrupt electronic address. Open the Contact Record and see if
the electronic address for the Contact is valid (i.e., resolved or
underlined).

Thanks,

What would a corrupt email address look like?

It's a strange problem, when I click on "Contacts" in the folder tree
on the left, all is ok, I can scroll through the email addresses and
open them ok. But when I click the little address book icon on the
toolbar, and try & scroll through the "Outlook Address Book
Contacts", it all goes bad and Outlook crashes.

Weird.

Two other remedies that may work:
1. Search for any corrupt addresses in the Contacts Folder
2. Update video drivers

Hi there,

I tried that, but it didn't work.

The error is, if she creates a new message, then clicks on 'To...'
which then opens her 'Outlook Address Book' and then clicks the
down arrow to scroll down the list of contacts an error appears
saying outlook has generated errors and must exit.

What else can I try?

Thanks,
Steve.

No, they won't disappear. You will need to reconnect the pst ot
the new profile though.

Thanks for that.

If I delete the profile, will all her saved emails disappear as
well? Or should I export them first, then import them back to the
new profile? Will that re-create the same problem, or should that
fix it?

Thanks again,
Steve.

I initially thought it was an Outlook problem on her PC, but
when she
logs onto another PC it does the same thing. I've read other
newsgroup postings and am now led to believe that it is a
corrupt
address book. But I've got no idea how to fix this. Does anyone
have
any ideas?

Thanks,
Steve.

Is she using a roaming profile in Windows? That would explain
why she has
the same results on another computer. Try deleting & re-creating
her mail
profile.

Also - make sure that she (and all others) have the latest
patches/SPs for
Office by going to Office Update....you can see this link on
Windows Update
(which you should also run regularly).

Hi there Russ,

Well it's all sorted now. I exported everything as a PST and scanned it with
that program, and it said it was all ok. I then deleted the exchange
mailbox, and re-created it, and imported the PST back in.

Now it all goes ok.

Thanks for all you help!
Steve.
