Address bar search not working

Guest

I have not been able to type in a search to the address bar for some time,
but the "search" button works fine. How would I get the search from address
bar working again? I have already trieds to reset the defaults and modify
the "search from address bar" in the "Advanced" settings window.

won't. Also, each needs to be updated with the program's update function

Hi jduca,

You can also try installing my alternative address bar Quero which allows
you to seamlessly access urls and search from only one toolbar.

I welcome your feedback.

OK, now that I have had an opportunity to try this...it does not work either.
However, in my haste to fix this error, I read that I could "re-install" the
IE, at least that is what I believed. So I have deleted some of the folders
in the "C" drive. Now I cannot re-install the IE without the SP 2
update...and since I cannot find the correct file...I am about to give up and
live with the error.

I will attempt to save my data and programs that have been installed since
about 2 years ago, then re-format and start over.....it is a good thing to do
this every couple of years anyway :)

Hi jduca :)

You need to give us a few more details here to work with :)

Is it XP Pro or XP Home Edition? Do you recall which folders you deleted?
Do you have your original XP install CD? Or is it an OEM install (came
pre-loaded on your machine with no backup CD)? Did you install the SP2
after you installed your XP or did it come with it? Is the SP2 listed in
the Add/Remove programs in the Control Panel? Are you getting any error
messages? What is the exact wording, including any numbers.

Can you do a System Restore? If so, restore your machine to a date prior to
the date the problem started, if possible. Then we can start fresh to
resolve the problem. :)

Guess my frustration showed??

Let me start over. XP Home, and yes, I have the original disks.
I downloaded and installed SP 2
SP 2 is NOT listed in the add/remove programs. But when I attempted to
re-install the IE, after asking to remove it from the "add/remove windows
components" window, it wanted me to insert the SP2 disk
I have had the problem for quite a while, I would say 6-8 months. I believe
that I got a virus/spyware in the past and it corrupted my search engine from
teh address bar. The others work fine. I just found this site and thought
I would try.

The folders remaining under "program files/internet explorer" are
"connection wizard" and "plug-ins"

Maybe a restore to the time before I deleted them? I will wait before
proceeding...for a change.

Hi jduca :)
Guess my frustration showed??

Very understandable :) Thank you for the additional information , it
really helps.

OK...unlike other versions of Windows, IE is not a separate program, it is a
core part of the XP program, therefore, it 'can not' be uninstalled. That
may be why you got the message you did when you tried to do that. IE can
only be repaired or reinstalled.

I think you are right in that some of the system files may have either been
corrupted or damaged by the scumware, or the removal of same, both of which
can happen.

First, create a new restore point in your system restore for backup if you
can.

Then go to Start>Run and type in the following, or cut and paste from here
to be sure to get it correct. See if that helps. Have your XP CD on hand,
you may need it.

sfc /scannow

If this does not help, then try the System Restore, although, it may be that
steps taken thus far may have removed or flushed any prior restore points,
but, it is worth a try at this point.

If you can't do a system restore, or it does not work, then you will need to
do a repair/reinstall of the IE.

You *may* have to uninstall SP2 in order to do the above and then reinstall
it:

How to remove Windows XP Service Pack 2 from your computer
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;875350&Product=winxp

You *must* go to the Windows Update website as soon as the restore or repair
process is finished and reistall the necessary updates.

If you have any questions or need further instuctions post back here.
Relax, and take your time to work through the steps. You'll be fine. :)

Hope this helps :)

Hi Jan;

Tried all you mentioned, up to and including re-installing (repair) XP. I
restores to the earliest date possible, after creating a restore point, no
good. Did a reinstall based on my version of IE, after I had uninstalled
SP2. Then did all the updates at the Microsoft website.

Same problem continues. Noticed another post about the same thing and have
checked the registry; it appears
OK....HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\AutoComplete
it displays a (default) with "value not set
append completion with "yes"
Autosuggest with "Yes"

that is all that is shown.

I will stand by and attempt your next suggestion.....and thank you for the
help.
