Adding users to MDW file

A

I've been asked to manage an old database project (the previous database
administrator left the company) and I need to add users to the MDW file.
I've been searching on Google for the last couple of hours trying to
understand the security aspect of Access, but still have some questions.

1. How do I add users to the existing MDW file? If I run the Workgroup
Admin exe, all I can do is Join or Create a new one.

2. Barring that, can I delete the SECURED.MDW file and rename
SYSTEM.MDW to SECURED.MDW to start from scratch?

Thanks!

I would NOT delete the workgroup and start over. If your database is
secured, it needs that workgroup to run.

To modify users, join the workgroup and open your database. In the Tols
menu, select Security, then User and Group Accounts if you wish to
add/delete. Select User and Group Permissions to change what they have
access to.

Join which workgroup? (I'm a novice here with the security stuff.)
Once I join the workgroup, will I see all the users?

If you have the database opened, you are joined to a workgroup (mdw) file.
I would assume it is the 'secure.mdw' file that you mentioned in your first
post.

Assuming the database is secured, it would not allow you to open the file
unless you were joined to the appropriate workgroup, or had it pointed in a
shortcut. In either case, if the file is opened, then the workgroup is also
opened (if the file is secured).

Go the the menu as I specified and you should see the users and groups that
are built for the workgroup and database files that you have opened.

Yes.

I can see the users from User and Group Permissions, but don't see a way
to add new users. Sorry for being dense.

In the "User and Group Accounts" box, the first tab is "Users". There
should be a button just below the drop-down list that lets you add a
"New..." user.

No proble. That is why this group is here. The only way to learn is to ask
questions and experiment.

Tools, Security, User and Group Accounts - it is here that you will see the
users (you can add new ones), and their membership in groups.

Tools, Security, User and Group Permissions, is where you set the
permissions that groups/users have on the mdb objects (in the currently open
mdb)

If you are not logging in as a member of the Admins Group, then you won't be
able to add/remove users.

Doh! Sorry, it was there all along but didn't see it when I dropped the
list down.

Thanks for all the help Rick! I have another question but I'll ask in a
different thread.
