Adding program to the taskbar??

I have a small utility that I would like to add to the taskbar. It currently
resides in C:\Program Files and is alsopinned to my Start menu, but I'd like
to have an icon amongst the others on the right side of my taskbar (rather
than using up space by adding it to Quick Launch which I don't use). I can't
figure out how to install a shortcut icon where I want it. Can someone give
me the procedure?

The icons in the Notification Area (the place where the time is
displayed) represent running background processes, NOT shortcuts for
launching applications. Look at program shortcuts again. With the
default configuration, shortcuts will have a little arrow in the lower
left corner. The icons in the notification area don't have the arrows.

Maybe a Quick Launch menu with fewer shortcuts would be more acceptable?

You could pare the icons in the Quick Launch area down to what YOU
actually want there by dragging them to another folder in the start menu
system. The icons on the Quick Launch area are just shortcuts and are
normally in the "C:\Documents and Settings\Login Name\Application
Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch" folder. DON'T DELETE THE
SHORTCUTS, just move them to one of the startup menu folders! You may
also need to edit the "\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application
Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch" folder in a similar manner.

Put a shortcut to the program in your Startup folder.
Right click the Start button and choose Explore. The Startup folder is in
the Programs folder.
