if i can buy a suitable card does the 'memory' eg 256mb or
whatever
exist on the card or does it just take it from the RAM installed, in
my case 750mb total. just my old pc runs slower by the day, not sure i
want to splash out on a brand new PC thanx for any advice Don

Depends...

MOST new graphics cards have their own on-board video memory. Some cheap ones
also use RAM from the PC; they will usually say something like "512 MB _shared_
RAM".

You will also have to find out if your PC takes AGP or PCIe video cards...

Perhaps you could provide some more hardware details about your
PC. It sounds like you think the graphics are slow, and that
somehow a graphics card will fix it. Are you playing 3D games
on the computer ? Or is the normal 2D desktop behaving slower
than normal ?

These are examples of "half and half" techologies. They use
graphics memory soldered to the video card, but can also steal
additional memory from the system. For 2D desktop usage, they
likely won't need to steal any additional memory. But for 3D
gaming, they'd probably allocate some system memory.

Integrated graphics, such as when the graphics are built into
the Northbridge chip on the motherboard, tend to get all
their memory from the system memory. An exception to this
long tradition, is a sideport memory on this recently introduced
Gigabyte motherboard.

The black square chip underneath the clip on the blue PCI Express
slot, could be the sideport memory which connects to the Northbridge.
Considering the size of memories now used on motherboards like this,
it is unclear whether it does any good or not.
