Adding a usb/firewire drive

Hi. Don't know exactly where to go to ask this question, but I want to add a Hi Speed USB 2.0 and firewire 3.5 in. drive to my computer tower in the empty bay............
What kind of connection should I be looking for on the motherboard. Thanks? deango

Confusion. Is your intent to install a single 3.5in drive that supports
USB and firewire INSIDE your computer? This is not normally how it is
done -- drives of this sort are typically used by those who need the
convenience of movable storage or don't want to muck about inside their
computer. If one is going to the trouble to open the computer it is
cheaper and more efficient to use a normal storage device interfaced
through the IDE interface. Also a drive which supports both interfaces
will likely be even more expensive than other typical external storage
devices (I have a dual-interface enclosure that has been used with
standard CD-RW and DVD-RW drives with great success but it cost at least
50% more than an enclosure which supported either one singly).

As for what you might look for, motherboard USB connectors are typically
ten-pin headers which have a pinout like this:

but I'm not sure what sort of standard exists for motherboard firewire
connections.

Do you want to add both a USB 2.0 AND Firewire hard drive or do you
want to add a USB 2.0 drive OR a Firewire drive. Depending on how old your
computer is you either have the ports built into the Motherboard or you can
get a PCI
Card that has both USB 2.0 and Firewire Ports. You also should have
Windows XP SP2 update installed.
If you do a google search for USB 2.0 and Firewire you will get a
lot of information on what you are trying to
accomplish.

John and Rich. Thanks for your replies, I understand your confusion............I should have said that I wanted to install a usb hi speed and firewire HUB in the extra drive bay.
Belkin has a dual hub that does that, but I don't understand how it connects inside. Something about an 'upstream B Header Port'.............Sorry for the confusion.............deango

That link to the Intel site that I included shows what the internal USB
header should look like on a MB. As I wrote, I'm not sure that the
Firewire headers are that standardized. A look at your MB manual should
reveal all that you need. Look at what the MB offers and see if you have
any free connections -- that's about it.

Ask Belkin, ask in a hardware group. Yours is not an XP OS question.

Maybe your header title is inappropriate too?
