Adding a program for a limited user

I was recently able to add a new (old) user back to my laptop running XP and
thanks for the help.

Now I need to add a program, Outlook Express, so they can see it on their
desktop.

How do I do that?

I have much like problem with Bill. I have a limited user in my PC, some
programs were shared but some were not. How will I able to choose programs
for a limited user can use?

Sebastian,

I was finally able to do the program add by logging on in my indentity,
select the program you want to add to the other user and right click to
obtain the properties. that will give you the path to the execute file for
the program. Log off as you and log on as the user you want to add the
program to. go to "all programs" select "accessories" then select "Explorer".
Go to local disk and programs, find the program you want to add and select
the execute file. Double click it to make sure it works and then you can go
back to your explorer window and right click the executable file to put a
short cut on the users desk top. It worked for me at any rate.

Bill,
I logged as the user where to add the program to and I was able to locate
the executable file but when I doble-click that, it seems nothing happened,
it just like refreshing the page.

Sebastian,

I don't have any experience with XP. I just got this computer about two
weeks ago and I am feeling my way around it.

The program I was trying to add was Outlook express and the method I
outlined worked for that.

It might help if you told us the program you are trying to add.

I don't know what Nero is, but are the games internet games or are they stand
alone games? If they are internet games, you will also have to set up or
share an internet connection.

On further reflection, are you sure, really sure, tht you have the execute
file?

I know my first attempt with Outlook express gave me the same result you had
and when I checked further I found I didn't have the execute file. If
nothing else, you might try to pull up the properties and copy the path to
the clipboard and then pull up word pad or something and paste the result in
there. That way you can know for sure.

Bill,

Nero essentials and some video games. :D

You may experience some problems if the software was designed for
Win9x/Me, or if it was intended for WinNT/2K/XP, but was improperly
designed. Quite simply, the application doesn't "know" how to handle
individual user profiles with differing security permissions levels, or
the application is designed to make to make changes to "off-limits"
sections of the Windows registry or protected Windows system folders.

For example, saved data are often stored in a sub-folder under the
application's folder within C:\Program Files - a place where no
inexperienced or limited user should ever have write permissions.

It may even be that the software requires "write" access to parts
of the registry or protected systems folders/files that are not normally
accessible to regular users. (This *won't* occur if the application is
properly written.) If this does prove to be the case, however, you're
often left with three options: Either grant the necessary users
appropriate higher access privileges (either as Power Users or local
administrators), explicitly grant normal users elevated privileges to
the affected folders and/or part(s) or the registry, or replace the
application with one that was properly designed specifically for
WinNT/2K/XP.

Some Programs Do Not Work If You Log On from Limited Account

Additionally, here are a couple of tips suggested, in a reply to a
different post, by MS-MVP Kent W. England:

"If your game or application works with admin accounts, but not with
limited accounts, you can fix it to allow limited users to access the
program files folder with "change" capability rather than "read" which
is the default.

C:\>cacls "Program Files\appfolder" /e /t /p users:c

where "appfolder" is the folder where the application is installed.

If you wish to undo these changes, then run

C:\>cacls "Program Files\appfolder" /e /t /p users:r

If you still have a problem with running the program or saving settings
on limited accounts, you may need to change permissions on the registry
keys. Run regedit.exe and go to HKLM\Software\vendor\app, where
"vendor\app" is the key that the software vendor used for your specific
program. Change the permissions on this key to allow Users full control."

To all,

BurnRights worked for Nero! The only problem are games that I like to have
in my limited account. No, I don't connect my PC to internet, I just use it
for keeping my documents, games of course!

I have installed "Tiberium wars" and "Halflife". Their installation folders
were placed in "D:/" (supposed to be in C:/, just like other EA games that
I've installed). My admin can run these games but with my limited account,
only the Tiberium wars can be played. No desktop icon for Halflife, so i
created from D:/, but still I can't play it. Something weird is happening and
I can't figure it out!

I can't see halflife in "add/remove programs" both in admin and limited user.
But i can play it with admin.
