adding a partition

I want to add a partition to my hard drive (C:) I have the OS (Win2k Pro)
already installed.
I need the partition to store my files... here is why:
I Built PC and after I have been using it several months, I accidentally
stopped a proccess (not sure what it was). Immediately after that I started
getting "blue screen (dump of physical drive)" then it boots back up like
nothing happened or it is up for about a minute and repeats the dump again.
This happens intermitantly (usually when I need the pc most of course).
So you see, I don't have any choice but to format c:\ and reinstall the OS.
Please tell me there is a way to git r done.
thanks
Luke

Just re-install Win2000, either in the same folder as the failed
installation (if you're happy to overwrite it) or in a different
folder. You don't need a new partition.

however it's still a good idea to backup all important data first...
using a dvd burner is a good option

I would love to write over the C:\ folder if you could be descriptive about
how to get another folder added and how to direct the overwrite to the proper
folder.
thanks

How much data does a DVD disc hold? And how much do blank DVD's sell for?

Hey please read my other posts and let me know what to do. thanks

Luke just put the Windows 2000 disk in when you boot up. I think it
should take you to a screen where it asks you if you want to reinstall.
If you want to write over the old install, it will point you to C:WINNT
or something like that, to reinstall the new OS onto. Go ahead and do it
and see if that fixes it. If not, reboot with the disc in. Same screen,
tell you want to install clean. It will just format C: and put Windows
right back on.

Afterwards, you can use Partition Magic ($20 online to partition the
drive) or even do it now if the OS will stay up long enough for you to
use it.

Okay I have to back up a bit.
I currently am running in Win2k Pro(of which there are problems). I would
like to add a folder(I assume I don't need a partition) to load in win2k Pro
again. I assume I can have two OS's by doing this.

That being said, Lets say I don't want to format C:.
Questions:
Do I add a New Folder in C:(say WINNT2) then direct the start up disc to
that directory?
If so, will the install delete my personal files? (I know to backup).
After install, How do I get rid of the old OS?

1.) See the link I posted.
2.) No
3.) After backup perform a clean install of the operating system. To do a
clean install, either boot the Windows 2000 install CD-Rom or setup disks.
The set of four install disks can be created from your Windows 2000 CD-Rom;
change to the \bootdisk directory on the CD-Rom and execute makeboot.exe
(from dos) or makebt32.exe (from 32 bit) and follow the prompts.

When you get to the point, delete the existing NTFS and or other partitions
found. After you delete the partition(s) abort the install, then again
restart the pc booting the CD-Rom or setup disks to avoid unexpected drive
letter assignments with your new install and partition as desired.

Be sure to apply these to your new install before connecting to any network.

Okay got the backups done but the Win2K PRO CD will not proceed because
Service Pack 3(on the setup CD) is older than the current service pack 4 (on
the PC).
Can SP4 be uninstalled.?

To be honest I don't want to clean install Win2k Pro
I followed the link you provided and it says that the "Documents and
Settings folder" will not be changed by that proceedure. I would like to
keep that folder, So if SP4 can be uninstalled please tell me how. Otherwise
is there a workaround.
Thank you

An in-place upgrade will do you no good. (not to mention it isn't possible
with slipstreamed media) To make the partition smaller you'll need to delete
/ recreate.

This isn't how this thread started.

Can't a guy change his mind...<GRIN> It is true that what I said but that
was before Pegasus(MVP) said "Just re-install Win2000, either in the same
folder as the failed installation (if you're happy to overwrite it) or in a
different
folder. You don't need a new partition."

I then asked how to create this so-called folder and you pointed me to the
possibility at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;266465.
Bob replied on 12/30/05 with good info also about the possibility also.

At that point I thought that by simply adding a folder would allow me to
save/back up files to it, and then format c:\ and reinstall the OS.

So if I have to, I will format C:\, but not before exhausting all options to
create a folder that won't get wiped out on format.

However SP4 is apparently standing in the way of me using my setup disk at
all.
When I put the cd in and boot, it only gives me one option "Choose a
Profile" to load, of which there is only one "Profile1". If I put in the cd
after windows is up I get the message "Win2K PRO CD will not proceed because
Service Pack 3 is older than the current service pack 4".

That is why I asked about uninstalling SP4 in hopes of using the cd again.
If you say it won't do any good, then it just confused me as to why all the
talk earlier.

I'm just nervous about formating c:\ because it's a business computer and
backup's are in pieces because of the large file size. The past has proven,
to me at least, that those split backups don't always restore like they
should.
Does that make since.

SP4 isn't the problem. Your slipstreamed media is the issue. It's not
possible to do an in-place upgrade with slipstreamed media. Do the parallel
install, recover your data then do the clean install.

Thank you Dave,
Did you say "Do the parallel install, recover your data" so that I could
back it up? If so, I have already backed up the data so I assume that I just
need to clean install now. Is that correct?
I don't recall the option to install clean from the CD.. could you point me
how to do the clean install.
sorry I'm a pain, I just want to be sure.
thanks
