Add Printer Wizard not finding Drivers

When I try to add a network printer using the add printer wizard
it brings up the printer list. I choose HP then deskjet 500 but it
then asks me for a location for the driver. I have searched on XP
and know where the driver is but when I navigate there it is not
recognising the file. The display type of files drop down list is
greyed out and is set to HP---.dll and shows the directory is empty
how can I make it look for all files in this directory.

Sounds like the machine you are connecting to is a Windows 98 class machine.
The drivers XP ships with are in the driver.cab located in \Windows\Driver
cache\i386. The installation requires an inf file for this type of
installation. If you get the Manufacture/ Model list of drivers ntprint.dll
has successfully parsed ntprint.inf. By default the spooler knows to use
the files in driver.cab. If that file is missing, you will be prompted for
the file location.

If you took the Windows 98 drivers and copied them to the XP machine, they
are not compatible and will not work.
