add hardware wizard

add hardware wizard persists in trying to install printer
(epson sc 760)even when printer is already installed or
even when it has been removed from system.
shows ''new hardware has been found '' which it identifies
as 'printer'
Also ''printer'' entry has been removed from device manager
and apparently replaced by ''infra-red device'' although I
have never had one on my system.
I have tried 'repair' option from xp install disc without
success.
any suggestions before I totally reinstall system.
I don't want to do this if possible as I have no set up
disc due to Carreras claiming to be unable to supply one,
so that everything needs to be installed separately.
any suggestions gratefully received.

To work around this problem, enable the New Hardware Wizard to finish,
even though the wizard cannot detect a new printer.
