"add hardware" icon - says installation is underway....

Can anyone please help? This all started when I ordered a "MagicJack" and
tried to just "plug it in and I could then make phone calls using any phone"
- Does anyone else have one of these?

Anyway, after about 30 hours of being online in chat sessions trying to get
this to work, the following has now happened..

I go to Control Panel and open up "Add Hardware" - I then get this message:
"Cannot run 2 device installations - you can install only 1 device at a time
- Another device installation is underway - when it is finished you can try
this wizard again"

I have rebooted my laptop a number of times and I still get this message - I
cannot find out where another device installation is underway - and the only
device I have been trying to install is the MagicJack - oh by the way,
MagicJack does work, the only problem I have with it is that you are supposed
to be able to choose either "Telephone" or "Headset" and "headset" is
currently chosen and I cannot change it to "telephone"....the online chat
support people told me to get an AC powered HUB (High speed) because maybe my
Dell Latitude C640 did not have enough power to run the phone...got the High
speed Hub, but it didn't work because I only have a 1.1 USB port on laptop
and new hub is 2.0 USB - asked an earlier question here and found I could buy
a 2.0 USB card for my laptop. So I am going to get the 2.0 USB card and see
if that works.

However, I cannot find out how to fix my "Add Hardware" wizard.

Can anyone please help???? By the way, my operating system is Windows XP
Professional - Version 2002 - Service Pack 3

Thanks.

Richie Hardwick,
Been running mine (MJ) since Apr'08 attached to Comcast HSI, in SE Michigan, on
a Dell Dimension4600 XP SP3, with no problems. I use the 3 inch USB ext wire,
did not connect it directly to the rear USB port, because of the cabling setup
in the rear of the PC. Are you using the rear ports or the front USB ports on
your PC? You may need to use the back ports or an "powered" USB port hub, for
the connection. Don't use the front ports, on your PC. You might be experiencing
the same problem that happens when you try using the front ports with some
printers or digital cameras. The front USB ports may not provide enough power to
the USB device connected to it.

I did... it caused a minor problem with my computer - an occasional
system hang for about 30 seconds (found the problem in the event logs)
- so I sent it back before the 30-day trial expired.

You might give serious thought to doing the same.

Rich,

I only have a Dell Latitude C640 laptop which only has one USB port and it
is 1.1 USB, so that is why I bought the 2.0 AC powered USB Hub, but I had to
plug it into the 1.1 USB port, so it could not use all of the additional
power. I am now going to buy a 2.0 card to use on the laptop, and I am
hoping that will have enough power so that I can use the MJ with a telephone
- Since you have a MajicJack, you know on the MajicJack softpad, up at the
top right, you can choose "Menu", then you choose "Volume/Headset Control",
then the box comes up that says "choose your device" and you can choose
either "telephone" or "headset"? Well, the "headset" on mine is checked, and
I cannot change it to "telephone", so I cannot use a telephone when I make
calls with the MajicJack - Customer support chat techs told me that I may not
have enough power on my laptop for the phone, so that is why they told me to
get an AC powered hub and plug the MJ into that - it would have more
power....Are you able to use your phone with your MajicJack?

But, then I noticed the problem with my "Add Hardware" icon and I am no
longer able to use it because it keeps saying that another installation is
underway, and I have not tried to install anything other than the MajicJack -
I am trying to use the MajicJack because I have a friend who is going to work
in Africa for a year, and if both of us have a MajicJack, we will be able to
make free calls!!

Thanks for your help!

I am having the same problem: When I go to Control Panel and open up "Add
Hardware" - I then get this message: "Cannot run 2 device installations - you
can install only 1 device at a time - Another device installation is underway
- when it is finished you can try this wizard again." I have not been able
to clear the problem even with a reboot. I am trying to install an HP
external DVD drive but am kept from doing so by this problem.

Does anyone know a solution?
