AD upgrade question 2000 to 2003

JDTHREE [MVP]

I currently have 2 DC's running 2000 SP4, one of them running Exchange
5.5SP4 on it. I've gotten two new machines, one for letting me
finally get away from exchange 5.5, the other for a replacement DC
once I take the DC with 5.5 out of the picture.

Now, in my reading, I've seen that I need to install Exchange 2003 to
the 5.5 site before I do the AD upgrade to 2003, since I can run
Exchange 2003 in the Windows 2000 environment, but wouldn't be able to
deal with exchange 5.5 in a 2003 AD environment.

I've ran the exchange migration through many iterations in a virtual
machine environment that mirrored my real life infrastructure, and it
worked just fine. My question, though, involves domainprep and
forestprep.

I see that part of the 2003 AD upgrade would be to run these utilities
to upgrade the schema for my existing AD to prepare it for 2003.
however, part of the exchange 2003 upgrade includes running these
prior to installing Exchange 2003. Are they redundant? Or is there a
difference?

My gameplan is: New exchange server installed with 2003 as a domain
member in my 2000 AD environment. This would include the necessities
of domainprep and forestprep. Then I would uninstall exchange 5.5
from the site, remove the ADC's from the exchange server once all
private and public data was xferred over to the new 2003 Exchange
server.

Then I had planned on running DCPROMO on the old exchange server to
demote it back to a domain member. This would leave me with the old
DC / Exchange server that I could remove from the domain (being
retasked elsewhere offsite).

Then I planned on upgrading the current DC (would be a single one at
that point) to 2003, then bring in the second new server that will be
nothing more than DC that's also a minimal file server (other DC is
main file server). Once second new server was part of domain, run
dcpromo on it, transfer some of the roles to it (since it's a great
deal more powerful than existing DC) and viola, 2003 AD and 2003
Exchange done.

I'm still looking for more info regarding the domainprep and
forestprep, but figured I'd ask in here to see if I could find a quick
answer . I assume even if I ran it a second time, it wouldn't hurt
anything? But is it even needed before upgrading my current 2000 DC
to 2003 if the Exchange 2003 server install already did those steps?

Thanks for any information

John

Hi John. adprep/forestprep and adprep/domainprep preparing the domain for
Windows Server 2003 Domain Controllers, and will update the schema. Here is
a good site this is described in details.

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/pr...rectory/upgadc14.mspx#XSLTsection126121120120

When you deploying the first Exchange Server 2003, there is a preparation
tool for forest as well the domain too.

Hi,

Please run the adprep/forestprep and adprep/domainprep separately to update
its schema. Regarding migrating to Exchange 2003, please refer to this
Deployment Guide: Exchange 2003 Deployment Guide. For your convenience, I
