AD/DNS/RAS Problem

I have a Windows 2000 SBS Server running Active-Directory Integrated DNS,
DHCP, and RAS. I am running into a bunch of issues in regards to DNS.

RAS leases several IP addresses from DHCP, and these addresses are
registered in DNS. I also have two external IP addresses for this server
that are also registering themselves as my DC. So in DNS we have several IP
addresses listed for the Domain Controller. I am having issues with
workstations connecting properly to the network, When I ping the Domain
Controller from these workstations I get an IP address from RAS and not the
static IP of my Domain Controller in the network settings.

What's worse is I went into DNS Manager and found all my Domain information
is gone out of DNS, the _Tcp folder, the Sites, folder all gone. All I am
left with is a _msdcs folder with one record,
gc 10.1.0.15 (I have no idea where this address is coming from. Our network
range is 10.0.0.x. And of course the 7+ IP addresses for my Domain
Controller from RAS.1

I have not configured this server and do not know what has been set
incorrectly or how to go about fixing this problem, I have never seen this
before.

In

I have a Windows 2000 SBS Server running Active-Directory Integrated
DNS, DHCP, and RAS. I am running into a bunch of issues in regards to
DNS.

RAS leases several IP addresses from DHCP, and these addresses are
registered in DNS. I also have two external IP addresses for this
server that are also registering themselves as my DC. So in DNS we
have several IP addresses listed for the Domain Controller. I am
having issues with workstations connecting properly to the network,
When I ping the Domain Controller from these workstations I get an IP
address from RAS and not the static IP of my Domain Controller in the
network settings.

What's worse is I went into DNS Manager and found all my Domain
information is gone out of DNS, the _Tcp folder, the Sites, folder
all gone. All I am left with is a _msdcs folder with one record,
gc 10.1.0.15 (I have no idea where this address is coming from. Our
network range is 10.0.0.x. And of course the 7+ IP addresses for my
Domain Controller from RAS.1

I have not configured this server and do not know what has been set
incorrectly or how to go about fixing this problem, I have never seen
this before.

Is this SP4?
This appears to be a single label domain name (domain vs. domain.com) which
causes a registration problem for XP Pro Win2k3 and Win2k SP4.
Read this KB article about Single label domain names: 300684 - Information

If this is not a single label domain name then it could be a disjointed
namespace I would need an ipconfig /all and the actual domain name in ADUC
to verify that.

Then in your DNS server properties on the interfaces tab you should use
*only* the private address of your DC and use that address only in TCP/IP
properties for all machines. This is very important all machines including
the DC MUST point to this address for DNS (not the 127.0.0.1 loopback), for
internet access configure your local DNS server as per step 3 of this KB:

Also in Network Properties control panel, advanced in the menu, Advanced
Settings, configure you binding order so that your Private Interface that
has the address that DNS is listening on is at the top of the order and that
File sharing and Client for MS networks is bound to that interface.

One more thing If you have a NIC on the DC that has a public address that
you do not have DNS listening on or File Sharing bound to follow this KB to
stop the creation of the blank records and create only the blank records for
the addresses on the DC's that file sharing is bound to you may also have to
manually create the Blank records in the gc sub folder 295328 - Private
Network Interfaces on a Domain Controller Are Registered in DNS
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=295328&FR=1 These records are needed for
Group policies.

I have recently installed SP4 and have a Single Label Domain Name. I read
your article and did the following.

I went in to change the "UpdateTopLevelDomainZones (REG_DWORD) registry
value" in
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\DnsCache\Parameters"
to 0x1 and found it didn't exist.
I have created it but when I enter "1" as the value I don't get "0x1" like
the article indicates, I get "0x00000001". Is that what I am supposed to
have?

I won't be able to test until tonight, so I won't be able to let you know if
this worked or not. Once the DC is rebooted with this registry entry should
DNS function again and the missing records return?

AllowSingleLabelDnsDomain (REG_DWORD) registry value to 0x1
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Netlogon\Parameters

Please remember that you will have to add these keys for all Windows 2000
machines running SP4 and XP machine.

Just for a side note, since your running RRAS, What is your 1 bh and 1ch for
the domain registerd? Is it with a VPN client?

Look at this for us too, open the mmc for DNS, right click your server
name,then properties, On the interface tab, what do you have selected? All
IP address or Only the following? Then look in the white box, do have your
nic's listed there? Sometimes, when you run RRAS ON A DC, you will see the
first VPN connections IP address there. Is this your case? If so, select
only the following IP address, remove the VPN address and make sure the ip
address box is blank.
Then go into your Forward lookup Zone, Highlight your zone name on the left
plane. Look on the right plane and remove only the ip address (the VPN one)
that refrence Same a parent folder.

To get this to not register in DNS, go to this location in the registry.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\DNS\Parameters
Value name: PublishAddresses
Data type: REG_SZ
Value data: IP address of the internal interface. If more than one IP
address needs to be specified, separate the addresses with spaces.

Then:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Netlogon\Parameters

Value name: RegisterDnsARecords
Data type: REG_DWORD
Range: 0 through 1, default value: 1. Change this value to 0.
