Hi
I installed a P2P spyware destroying program. I accidentally deleted the quarantine file that apparantly had something important for my internet connection. I know now that some of microsoft's files can look like P2P, and be removed when you need to keep it. The point, I have deleted something that I need to connect to the internet. I don't know the name of the file. My ethernet adapter is working properly as well as my DSL modem. My connection is there, but I cannot get to the 'net. Can anyone help?

D.,

I ran across the exact same problem last week. A poorly written solution
can be found here:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;817571

The way I solved the problem was to delete the keys:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock2

and then importing the same keys from a computer that is similarly
configured and working.

Good Luck,

Dave H.

Hi

Has the program you installed got an 'undo' option? If so try that. If not, try a System Restore back to a point before your problem started.

This program should be used on Windows 98, 98SE, or Windows Me computers
only! whose Winsock2 information has been corrupted by poorly written
Internet programs.

Ad-aware and other spyware cleaners remove parasites from the winsock file
and/or registry. This sometimes will cause internet browsers to fail. I
found a program referral right here at this site, W2Fix.exe, that worked for
me.

I've used Ad Aware and Spybot Search & Destroy on a Win2000 and an XP Home
machine for a year or more. I have had no problems with either of them.

You have to be careful to screen the Registry entries you allow them to
delete, though. If one causes a problem, use the restore feature to put it
back!

You may be downloading from an outdated site. Use downloads.com and you'll
get the XP version.
