'ActiveX security settings...' the ONLY error message I get from I

Hi

Regardless of what my security settings are, and regardless of the nature of
the error, the only error message IE6 throws at me is 'Your current security
settings prohibit running ActiveX controls. As a result, the page may not
display correctly.' This is a little frustrating. I was sure I came across a
fix for this in the Knowledge Base, but now I am unable to find it.

Has anybody come across this, and can you provide a fix?

Many thanks.

hi

when you're in the browser if you go to tools then internet options. in
there go to the security tab and highlight the internet icon and click the
custom level button at the bottom. In there it shows activex options where it
says disable, enable and prompt. try changing which ones you feel will work
for you to enable or prompt and it should work

Hi

That rather misses the point. I have altered the activex settings to their
minimum, but the problem is that is the ONLY error box IE generates. For
example, I see it when it should show 'could not locate the specified
server'. Any error type i generate results in the same error box. Is that any
clearer a description?

Did you ever find a solution to your problem. I have the same problem
downloading activex controls. The computer tries but the install is blocked
and I can't find where the problem is.

Thanks,
Mike

The most common issue with this error - and when your security settings are
no help - is a file corruption or version mis-match with the comcat.dll
file. See this site for troubleshooting:
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/answers3.htm#activex
For Windows XP users the version should be 5.0.2600.1 and the file should be
in C:\WINDOWS\system32

Jon,
I have the right version of comcat.dll, just checked. As to the file
corruptions I'm not sure, since I don't know what files to look at.

Tried something this morning to get some more info.
Turned off Firewall
Disabled everything in my Antivirus, turned it off
set IE security setting to low

and then tried to download/install an activex control from the web. Went
thru the yellow banner and install clicks. Still nothing. The cab files are
sitting in the temporary internet files folder and nothing got installed.
Found an error html file for each cab file which was never displayed. If I
use the Clsid number associated with the error html in the registry I find
them in the hive HKCU /Microsoft/software/windows/currentversion/ext/stats.
The clsid number there shows in /Iexplore the object was BLOCKED and is
keeping a tally on how many times it has been blocked.

This would tend to indicate that there is a big problem somewhere with my
brand new system. I have seen other people discribe the same problem, but no
solution.

Hello to all of you who seem to be having the same problems as me at almost
precisely the same time... Here is what has happened to me:

When I try to open Norton Anitvirus I get the aforesaid IE error message,
when I try to load a program from a cd that uses IE I get the same IE error
message, when I used the internet I get the same IE error message. I have
called gateway, norton, and the people who manufactured my program on cd-rom.
The guy from the cd-rom company took me to Tools/internet options and had me
click the advanced tab and I scrolled down to the security section and
manually chose to allow active controls on my computer and from a cd-rom.
Well, instead of fixing norton and his program it fixed my internet problems.
So that is fixed for me but the others aren't. One interesting thing is
that I created another comp. administrator and when I use norton through it
it works like a dream, so to the guy with the new computer, try created a new
comp. admin and deleting the old one. That won't work for me b/c I got too
much stuff in my old account and also that hasn't fixed everything for me.
Another problem I having is that I can't open the task manager, are y'all
having the same trouble?

I hope I have shed a little more light on the situation but I think rather I
have exposed more shadows. Help!

His tomb is empty!
