Active Desktop

I used to have a html page (just a home made creation) displayed on my
desktop a few years ago, however I have tried to do the same on my XP
machine and I am unable to display it. I don't see any settings anywhere to
enable Active Desktop, but I believe that active desktop is enabled as I use
Active Desktop Calendar. I tried disabling ADC but still cannot get any kind
of html page to display on my desktop.

Any ideas?

Although less convienient, the web page (.htm) can be embedded with the
activex, and displayed in Display app/properties, desktop tab, "customize
desktop" button, Web tab.

To disable the SP2 warning for running activeX on a local computer page, go
to : IE, Tools menu, Options, Advanced Tab, -- scroll down to the Security
area, check the box for, "Allow active content to run in files on My Computer"

I tried all that you advised below, I don't get the warning but I still
ticked the box that you advised, but I still see nothing on my desktop, just
as a trial I used www.bbc.co.uk and it appears to connect and synchronise
OK, but I still see nothing?

I would guess you did not unlock the desktop while you were there.

Well, that is not a local page. Probably you need to surf to the site, and
wait for the activex warning to click and approve running it.

Thanks Mark,

The 'Lock the Desktop' button was not ticked. I don't get any activex
warning at all, I have also tried using a html file created by me on my PC
and it still does not appear. I have disabled everything that I could
imagine would possibly interfere with desktop settings (Webshots & Active
Desktop Calendar) but still no joy.

Below, when you say 'surf to the site' I don't get an option to do that, I
just have an option to type a URL (or browse to a file or a favourite)

I am stuck on this.

When you right-click a blank area on the desktop on a computer that runs
Windows XP, the shortcut menu does not display the Active Desktop command.
In Windows XP, Active Desktop is always turned on and you normally cannot
disable it. Active Desktop can be disabled, but you have to use TweakUI or
Group Policy (only with XP Pro) or change some settings in the registry.

If Show Desktop icons, Lock web items on Desktop and Run Desktop Cleanup
Wizard appear when you right click the Desktop and point to Arrange Icons By
then Active Desktop is enabled.

Right click Desktop | Properties | Desktop tab | Customize Desktop button

If you have the Web tab in Display Properties then Active Desktop is
enabled.

To add Web content to your desktop
1. Right-click a blank area on the desktop and then click Properties.
2. On the Desktop tab, click Customize Desktop.
3. On the Web tab, click New and then follow the instructions on your
screen.
4. To update the content, click the Synchronize button.
5. If you wish to disable Active Desktop, make sure all checkboxes in this
window are un-checked.

Notes
* You must be connected to the Internet to add active Web content to your
desktop.
* To browse Microsoft's Desktop Gallery Web site, in the New Desktop Item
Wizard, click Visit Gallery. The New Desktop Item Wizard opens when you
click New on the Web tab.
* To select a different Web site, type the Web site address, or click Browse
to locate it.

Thanks for that, that was what I was doing, I go through all the motions as
you described and everything appears to work with no error messages, but the
content never actually shows on my desktop.

I have done the exact same procedure on my wife's PC and it works perfectly.
I must have something that is preventing the content being displayed but I
cannot work out what it could be.

Do you know of any programs or settings that could prevent any html pages
being displayed?

posting again in the hope that someone new may see this or that someone may
have thought of a cure:-

Right click on an empty space on the desktop and choose Properties.

Choose the Desktop tab.

Choose Customize Desktop

Choose the Web tab

Choose New and navigate to where the html file is that you want to display.

Thanks for that, but that is what I have tried many times, I can select a
file or URL and then I get a message box saying 'Synchronising' as if it is
going to add the HTML to the desktop, but then nothing happens to the
desktop.
