ActivCard Gold on WinXP problem (Smart card issue)

I have installed ActivCard Gold 2.2 on Windows XP Professional SP2.
Whenever I attempt to access the CAC reader it displays the following
error:

The specified reader is not currently available for use!

The Smart Card Service is started. I am using an ActivCard serial port
reader. I do not believe it is recognizing the reader on the serial
port.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks,
