I upgraded my XP to Vista hp then decided to reformat using vista hp now it
tells me windows could not activate the activation key is all ready in use,
yes it is by the same computer how do I get it to activate?

There should be an option to activate by phone. Choose that one, call
Microsoft and let them know what happened. They'll give you an activation
code.

Pain in the ass, yes. The activation scheme in Vista is a lot more strict
than XP. What gets me is that the pirates already have a way around the
activation, so who is it really for?

But, giving them a call will get you back up and running. Shouldn't take
more than a few minutes. And it's a toll free call.
