I have reinstalled Windows XP Pro on the same hard disk to eliminate a nasty
virus. I have a valid CD and all worked fine. However activation is being
denied. Any solutions pls?

Telephone.
There is now a new policy (so I was told when I last had to activate my
RETAIL copy of XP by phone instead of the internet) that all versions of XP
are now only allowed ONE internet activation in the lifetime of the
software.

Another reason to go for Linux.

When did this happen?

Use the Telephone Activation. There is no restrictions as to how many times you can activate on the same PC . The info by others is wrong.

That is simply untrue. You can activate as many times as needed on the same PC by telephone

He didn't say that. He said you can only activate ON LINE once.

READ MY POST. I said that I was told that there is now only one activation
BY INTERNET allowed. I mentioned nothing about the telephone.

Interesting, I would appreciate it if an MVP or someone from Microsoft
could confirm or deny this.

Well, about two weeks ago, I re-installed three OEM XPs, one Spanish and
two English and both activated on line so it seems the person you spoke
to is out to lunch. One of them I reinstalled three days after the first
time and it still activated on line. Glad to know your information isn't
correct :)

It's not true. I just reinstalled XP on three computers, all generic
OEMs and all three activated on line with no problems.

Good advice for WGA (I guess) but not so good for WPA, which is what the
OP is having problems with.

I think that when Gordon called he got some teenaged kid who couldn't
read the scripted answers so the kid made up an answer.

That is totally incorrect.

Exactly when were you told this, and what was the Microsoft telephone
number that you used when you received this advice.

Wrong. I just reactivated an OEM version automatically last night
after a clean install on a new hard drive. The version was
previously activated when new and reactivated automatically on at
least one other occasion since then.

I contacted Microsoft about this rumor last year. Their response
indicated that it was totally false.
