acf url summary (an experiment)

Mark Carter

As an experiment, I thought I'd try to automatically summarise the links
posted on a.c.f. I've only done the last 100 emails, and used a fairly
simple python script to generate it. What it does is to list all the
sites appearing under a given thread.

I hope it proves useful.

That looks like it could be an excellent tool to post here or on the
PricelessWare page or elsewhere.

If you can do it, it would be helpful to have a "links of the day" post from
you every day :)

Or make the Python script available,
and users can generate it locally ....

Thanks for the encouragement. There's so much stuff that gets posted to
a.c.f. that I figured that it could well do with summarising. I don't
know about others, but I find that everything kind of gets lost in a sea
of postings. That's why I came up with the idea of producing a summary.

I ran the script from my home computer - which is all rather manual and
time-consuming. I might try it out on my office machine - because that
way the whole shebang can be automated. The problem is, on a quick and
dirty test, I couldn't log onto my ISPs usenet server from work. There
might be CLI involved - which prevents account holders from accessing
the internet from telephone lines other than the one they signed up for.

I signed up for news.individual.net a couple of days ago. Maybe their
server could be used to connect to - when I eventually get an account.

If you want a localized area, I'll set up a seperate news group on one of my
servers specifically for the summaries.

server: urls.sytes.net
port: 119
ng: sw.url.summaries

Interesting! Urrgh - I just realised another potential complication - my
company's firewall might block the port. Oh, but that might not be a
problem - presumably what matters that the server port is OK. Perhaps
the only thing I could do is try, first from home, and then from my office.

I have another news server set for a non-standard port if 119 doesn't work.

A preliminary test shows that I'm picking something up from your server
from home! I haven't determined exactly what yet, though. It appears
that different servers support different commands. For example, my
usenet server doesn't support NEWNEWS whereas yours does. Contrariwise,
mine supports XHDR, whereas yours doesn't. So I'll need a bit of time to
sort that one out. Then I'll do a test at work to see if I can receive
anything there.

The server on 119 is Argosoft. I have a secondary server put out by
SmartNewz.

As far as the servers go, they're freshly set up, but haven't been
advertised. So, for posts, they're quite bare.

I'll say: it's empty :)

I set up Thunderbird to connect to your server - which means that I can
actually see what's going on in a proper application - so I don't have
to always fiddle with things programmatically.

I've posted to sw.url.summaries - hope you don't mind - which contains a
link to my homepage to enable testing.

Is it your intention to mirror acf on that group?

BTW, my real email address is:

Servers don't come preloaded with posts. Somebody's gotta put them in
there.

I set up a copy of T-bird, but haven't had time to really work with it yet.

Have at it. I set that group up for your summaries. If you need more
groups just pop a simple request into the proper ng and I'll get to it as
soon as I pick it up. Also, if you need any posts deleted you can get with
me on that.

M

Mark Carter

I set up a copy of T-bird, but haven't had time to really work with it yet.

It's OK - whatever floats your boat, I suppose. It used to worked better
than Outlook for my purposes, but then my company's IT bird did some
fiddling with the security settings of the server, and now Thunderbird
wont email to my office account from home. So, go figure.

Actually - thanks for setting up the newsgroup: I realised that it will
save me a lot of hassle wrt to the automatic uploading of the results.
Otherwise it would mean trying to send a message using the Google usenet
website.

Actually, a major fly in the ointment is that I now realise that I am
probably not going to be able to access my ISP news server from work.
I'll probably have to wait for my requested news.individual.net
application to be accepted ... or I get broadband.

After doing a bit of casting around, I found a list of public news
servers at
http://directory.google.com/Top/Computers/Usenet/Public_News_Servers/
which I think will prove interesting to many readers on this group.

The one I chose in particular was
freenews.netfront.net

There are probably better ones, if you do more research.

M

Mark Carter

Things are progressing well. If you look at
sw.url.summaries
on
urls.sytes.net
you will find summary postings.

It only summarises the last 20 posts - but I am doing a test from my
cruddy home account. But the thing is (almost) completely automated from
free newsservers, bringing everything one step nearer to providing a
daily summary of a.c.f.. The next stage is for me to try it out from work.

The script is now up-and-running; although still in an alpha (but
useful) state.

You can find summaries of the links for the last 1000 posts to acf
posted on server urls.sytes.net, newsgroup sw.url.summaries. Many thanks
to Ceg for making the group available to me!

The summary is now generated at around midnight every day. 1000 posts
covers about 3 days of acf postings - so you may want to check the
newsgroup twice-weekly.
