Accessing Desktop on Slaved HD

Due to some HD problems I installed a new HD, re-installed WinXPHome and am re-installing software apps. My next goal is to copy/paste old data from the slave HD (F:drive) That copy o WinXp was password protected and my attempts to access F:desktop is denied. What do I do

Thank

Hi,

You need to take ownership of the files. Right-click the folder, select
properties. Go to the security tab and click advanced. You can take control
of the folders on the owner tab. For the security tab to appear in a WinXP
Pro system, you must disable simple file sharing in the control panel/folder
options/view tab. For a WinXP Home system, you must restart in safe mode and
logon as administrator. More details here:

HOW TO: Take Ownership of a File or Folder in Windows XP [Q308421]
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=308421

An additional note for WinXP Pro users: This procedure will not help you
recover data if the files are encrypted. All you will be able to do is
delete them. To recover encrypted files you will need the original
encryption certificate or a Recovery Agent from the installation under which
they were encrypted. Without one of these, the files are not recoverable.

Let me start over again...I was having a number of "delayed write/read" errors with my HD after installing a Radeon 9800 Pro vid card. The 250watt power supply wasn't suffiecient, and I _think_ it scrambled my HD somehow. I installed a new HD, set it as master, set old HD to slave. Reinstalled XPHome on new HD. Both new & old HD are set for NTFS

Software programs I use are reinstalled on new HD. The old HD is assigned to F: drive. Using WinExplorer, I can see contents of Program folder on F: What I cannot locate (have used search) are folders (which were on old desktop) containing spreadsheets, Word docs, photos, etc.

The old XPHome was set-up with front screen password protection. If I open F: with WinEXPLORER, I can see the Documents and Settings folder, which is where I presume my old files are. How do I find, collect and transfer them to my new HD? I've tried transferring file owner ship but when I right click a folder, open properties, what I see for tabs are
General, Sharing & Customize. I have moved the Docs & Settings folder into a Shared folder, but I still can't find my old data.
One more oddity...I used my name "CHRIS" when assigning a password to the old XP OS. The folder "CHRIS" is visible in old Docs & Settings. Any attempt to copy, move or access the file is met by a "Access Denied" message. If I scroll over the "CHRIS" folder with cursor, message "folder empty" is displayed

Sorry to be so verbose but I'm trying to paint a full scenerio of my problem

Many thanks!!

Hi Chris,

With the "Chris" folder on the old drive, you need to take ownership using
the previously described steps. Make note of how you get the security tab to
appear in WinXP, as that is part of the problem you are having. If you saved
the files in the "My Documents" folders, then your old profile is where you
will find them.
