hey all.

i had a problem starting my computer, it came up a currupted file in configeration. so i performed a disk recovery and followed on screen instructions. i then pressed 'R' and was told 'i WILL NOT' loose any data. once i performed the recovery it asked for a username. then i went into my documents and there was none of my documents. but all my installed programmes for still there.

i the went into user accounts and my orriginal usernames were in there. mine and my girlfriends. so i clicked my girlfriends and could see her docs. i then went into my docs and its came up access denied or write protected. both accounts had passwords but once done the recovery it never asked for them. but on my account i clicked private on the documents. how do i access this file, its really frustrating as i have alot of photos with sentimental value. i will grately be thankful if any one can solves my problem.

many thanks.

Welcome to the Forums ...

Can you please explain what "recovery" method you used ... was it using the XP CD and "R" as in ... "to repair an XP installation using Recovery Console, press R" ... or another method?

I suspect you need to take "ownership" of your files ...

To take ownership of a folder, follow these steps:

1.Right-click the folder that you want to take ownership of, and then click Properties.

2.Click the Security tab, and then click OK on the Security message (if one appears).

3.Click Advanced, and then click the Owner tab.

4.In the Name list, click your user name, or click Administrator if you are logged in as Administrator, or click the Administrators group. If you want to take ownership of the contents of that folder, select the Replace owner on subcontainers and objects check box.

5.Click OK, and then click Yes when you receive the following message: You do not have permission to read the contents of directory folder name. Do you want to replace the directory permissions with permissions granting you Full Control?

All permissions will be replaced if you press Yes.
Note folder name is the name of the folder that you want to take ownership of.

6.Click OK, and then reapply the permissions and security settings that you want for the folder and its contents.
