Yes but it is not straightforward. First you need to read and understand
the Access security FAQ. There's a link to it on my web site but be
prepared for a steep learning curve and have patience. Most of all, be sure
to work on COPIES of your files in case you lock yourself out. Also, don't
be tempted to skip bits of the FAQ, it's ALL relevant.

Keith.

I understand your frustration and there's a step by step example on my
website which might help clarify things but there really is no substitute
for the FAQ. Good luck.

Hello.... I have a question that is related to this topic. I thought that I
had security figured out on my database. The file is on a network server. I
set myself up as a user with full permissions, and two others as "read-only."
When I open the database (as a full permissions user), the other two users
(read-only) are unable to open it. They get an error message: "Could not
use 'Admin'; file already in use." Is this something that I can fix, or is
that just the way it is?
Thanks.

Lynn:

No... on the folder where the file is stored, the we all have full access.
I set up the "full permission" & "read-only" access from the user-security
wizard in Access.... The "read-only" users can open the file when I'm not
using it, but they can't open it when I have it open (full permission).
Thanks for your help.

I'm pretty sure.... in Access, under Tools, Security, Users &
Permissions.... when my username is highlighted, "open/exclusive" is
unchecked...

Julie,
that just means that, as an individual user, you can't open the database
exclusively. However, since you are probably a member of the Admins group,
you can. Still, unless you did something to specifically open it
exclusively, then that's not your problem. I'm gonna have to think on this
one a bit. Are your read-only users being prompted for a UserName/Password?

I thought that the problem might have been because I was a member of the
Admins group, so I took myself out of that group and made another user the
owner & a member of the Admins group. That username will rarely be used.
And yes, the read-only users, as well as myself (full permissions), are
prompted to login.

I'll let you think on it for a while. Thanks for your help.

Julie,
My next concern is whether or not all the users are using the same
.mdw file.

If you setup security correctly only one mdw file will let them into the file so
this concern becomes moot.

Lynn & Rick:

I'm pretty sure that all users are logging in to the correct .mdw file.
When I set them up, I "joined" the "secured.mdw" that I created.

I'm thinking now that I may not have followed all the steps. I sort of
jumped into this, and now what I'm reading on this site has enlightened me.
For example, I'm having to log in to all of my databases (which isn't really
an issue since the other two read-only users only use this particular
database). But I should have had the wizard set up a desktop short-cut.
Anyway, maybe I should start over by giving all users full access, etc. (as
Lynn has posted under "removing user level security"), then start over
creating a new .mdw file?

I appreciate all your help...

That isn't entirely true (although it is the most common setup). One can
use more than one mdw file to open a secured mdb. Every mdb I've secured
has two mdw files that I use with it.

That's true, Rick, but "setup security correctly" is the key phrase here.
I'm starting to think that Julie has missed a step somewhere and,
effectively, locked out her "read-only" people in the process.
