Hello,

When I download a file from the internet I get the option to open or save
the file. If I choose open, the file downloads but when its should open I
get the following error for my C:\documents and settings\....\local
settings\temporary interent files\content.IE5....
Access to the specified device, path or file is denied.
I have adminstrator rights on my computer. I use Windows 2000 Professional
and IE6.0 with all updates. How can I fix this?

Hi Ms,

Choose to save the file instead and once it has been downloaded choose the
Run button to install the program. Choose to save the file in a dedicated
Downloads folder, that way you can always re-install a program or install it
on another machine.

There appears to be something wrong with your Temp folder setting. Usually
when you choose to run a program from the internet a copy is first made in
the Temp folder. In your case it is attempting to copy the download file to
your History Folders and 'cause it is an executable the OS denies write
access even though you have Administrator rights.

Regards.

Hi Rob,

Is there a way to correct the problem with my Temporary internet folder? I
like having the "instant" open of a .doc, .pdf, .exe etcetera.

Hi msKatze,

I did not realize that your problem pertained to doc and pdf files launched
from web links.

Here is a test that you should try... Log on to your win2K machine on
another user account (normal user should be fine) and try surfing on that
account. If that account works fine then return to your administrator
account and check the sharing properties of the folder you mentioned which
was denying you access. You did not mention it but the full path should
include your User Name eg. c:\Documents and Settings\{User Name}\... etc.
Make sure it is using Your Admin account and not anothers user account.
I am guessing that you have installed a LAN (local area network) and
attached other computers (XP machines) to the network. There may be
conflicting Computer Names and User names on the network. Give each of your
computers a unique name.

Another reason may be that the file associations for pdf and doc files are
not set correctly on your account. Do you have the Adobe Acrobat and Office
installed for that account? Re-install or Repair those Applications if this
is the case (Add-Remove Programs applet).

Perhaps as the last resort you can re-install Internet Explorer. You will
find setup.exe in the Program Files\Internet Explorer folder.

And as a final, final last resort, abandon your account. Create a new
account and give it power-user or administrator rights. You will be given
options to use an existing profile to copy so you can take all of your
program access rights to the new account.

I kinda think this is just a user profile problem and that using a different
account to surf the web will be the solution.

Regards.

Hi Rob,

I have tried other accounts on my computer and even created a new one. This
happens on all account.
Yes, I do have a LAN but all computers have unique names. IP's are set by
the router.
I have Adobe and Office which work fine when I open files that I have saved
to my disk.
I checked sharing on my temporary interent folder and it is not shared.
Just as a test I shared the folder and granted access to myself. I still got
the access denied message.
Sorry that I didn't indicate that this happens with weblinks in IE.
