Hi, This sound like a possible configuration issue. The
first thing I would do would be to run the network
troubleshooter. To do this open up network connection. On
the left hand task pane click on network troubleshooter.
Then choose home & small office Networking
Troubleshooter. Also check the following:

Step 1: Turn on NetBIOS over TCP/IP
Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click Network
and Internet Connections.
Click Network Connections.
Right-click Local Area Connection, and then click
Properties.
Click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and then click
Properties.
Click the General tab, and then click Advanced.
Click the WINS tab.
Under NetBIOS setting, click Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP,
and then click OK two times.
Click Close to close the Local Area Connection Properties
dialog box.
Close the Network Connections window.

Step 2: Start the Computer Browser service
Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click
Manage.
Double-click Services and Applications.
Double-click Services.
In the right pane, right-click Computer Browser, and then
click Start.
Close the Computer Management window.

Let me know if you need any further assistance.

Hi,
Thanks for your feedabck. Based on my experience
sometimes unistalling all of the protocols and then re-
installing them can help. Please try the following

1. Go to the LAN connection properties
-Then un-install all of the items in the box. (note: you
will not be able to un-install TCP/IP)
-Once this has been done re-install the following
components only:
Client: File & Printer Sharing
Client for Microsoft Networks (may be under service)
Protocosl: Try with just TCP/IP
If that fails install: NW Link Netbios
NW Link IPX/SPX/Netbios Compatible...

If these steps do not help then try running the network
diagnostic tool:
Help & Support > Fixing a problem > Networking Problems >
'Diagnostic Network Confgiuration & run automated network
tasks'.

Let me know how you get on.

I've had exactly the same problem, and Hans-George's site sorted it - after
16 hours trying everything I could think of and find.

Go to his site, or try this:

You have all the following symptoms:

You can ping the computer by IP and by name.
When you type: net view \\computername, you get the error message, "Error 5:
You do not currently have access to this file. The file may be marked
read-only, or it may be part of a shared resource such as a folder, a named
pipe, a queue, or a semaphore. You can use the ATTRIB command to change the
read-only attribute, or try again later when the file may be available."
This is in some cases caused by a registry setting named RestrictAnonymous.
Go to the computer which you cannot access, start a registry editor and
change the following registry value.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
\SYSTEM
\CurrentControlSet
\Control
\Lsa
Value name: RestrictAnonymous
Value type: DWORD

If the value is 1 or even 2, change it to 0, reboot and retest. If the
problem is solved, leave the value at zero. If not, you can change it back if
you like.

Background: RestrictAnonymous controls whether null sessions, sessions that
work without any authentication and use the permissions of the groups
Everyone and NETWORK, are allowed (value 0) or disallowed (value 1). The
value 2 is obsolete for Windows XP.

Don't mistake this for the value named restrictanonymoussam, which controls
null session SAM account name listings.

The man is a GENIUS!

Hi,

I've received this same error message when trying to connect my network for
a while now, although it has worked before. (New HDD and OS install)

I found that on 3 out of 4 computers, installing "client service for
Netware" worked, with them happily chatting, sharing files and printers.
However the 4th PC has only XP Home and so I cannot install the client. I
tried pinging but got no response, then realised that I couldn't get a
response with any two of the computers that were happily sharing!?

I have 2 connected (wired) to a wireless router, with 1 wireless laptop
working fully and 1 not sharing, but able to connect to the internet via the
router. If anyone has any idea what's going on, please help

The "...access denied..." can have many causes. One of the most common causes
of this problem would be a misconfigured or overlooked personal firewall, but
there are other possibilities too.

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/10/irregularities-in-workgroup-visibility.html

You really don't need IPX/SPX ("client service for Netware"), except for one
very special case.

If no help yet, provide "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from each
computer, so we can diagnose the problem. Read this article, and linked
articles, and follow instructions precisely:

regarding the RegEdit did the trick. Works like a bought one..

Thanks

Thanks for the tip. I spent a couple of hours trying to find out why access
was denied, when in the past have had no problem. Still don't know why, but
your tip worked......Thanks!!
