Access between XP PCs

Deskop PC (XP HE SP1)
Laptop PC (XP HE SP2)

User accounts with the same names and same passwords exist on both PCs.
Same subnet. Same workgroup. The guest account is disabled on both PCs.

Assume I have logged on to both PCs using the same account name.

Now:
From desktop
MyNetworkPlaces: try to access Laptop: get a password dialog screen
pre-populated for the Guest account (prompting for the password). As there is
no Guest account I cannot get on. As no other username is prompted for (and
selection of another account is greyed out) I cannot get unto the laptop from
the desktop.

From Laptop:
MyNetworkPlaces: try to access Desktop: no password dialog screen - I get
straight on to the desktop (shared folders) without difficulty.

Why this problem?
Why can I get access in direction but not the other?
How do I fix it?

TIA.

Service Pack 2 automatically enables the Windows Firewall. If you are
not running a third-party firewall, go to the Windows Firewall applet
in Control Panel and enable File & Printer Sharing on the Exceptions
tab. If you are using a third-party firewall (and have properly
configured it to allow your lan traffic as Trusted), then turn the
Windows Firewall off. You don't want two firewalls running, and a
third-party program will be better than the WF. In any case, all
firewalls must be properly configured to allow lan traffic as Trusted.

Firewalls on both PCs already set to put all LAN traffic in Trusted.

It would have been nice to have known that from your first post. Here is
an excellent network troubleshooter by MVP Hans-Georg Michna. Go
through it carefully, answering all questions. It will help you
pinpoint where the problems lie. Then if you still need help, post back
with the results of the troubleshooter.
