Access 2003 Developers Extension

We have an Access XP application that we have just upgraded to Access
2003. Now comes the time to distribute this application to our users
BUT I only have the Access Developers XP Toolkit which I used quite
successfully to created the installers for the Access XP application.
I know that what I need are the "Access 2003 Developers Extensions"
and I know that these were included in Visual Studio 2005.

BUT when I recently went to purchase VS 2005, I was told that it
wasn't being distributed anymore and that I would have to get VS
2008. So I did.

BUT I can't find anything about the "Access 2003 Developers
Extensions" in VS 2008. And I can't find anything that makes any
sense about where I can obtain these.

I certainly hope someone can clearly explain what my next steps should
be because I have gone round and round in circles searching all over
the web for information.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can set me on the right track! Carol.

Is there any particular reason you 'upgraded' from XP to 2003?

Unless there was some overpowering reason (and there would be very few), I
suspect it will be infinitely easier (and cost efficient) to change the app
back to XP and use the XP toolkit you already have.

My copy of ADE 2003 was part of an MSDN subscription, but that is not a
route I would recommend for anyone unless they can justify the cost.
However, at this point in time I suspect a MSDN sub might be the only
available source short of buying used on eBay, et al.

Thanks, George. We upgraded because our organization has decided that
Access 2003 is the way to go for now (you can see that we're not early
adopters).

From what our procurement person told me, it looks like we might have
an MSDN sub as part of the purchase of VS 2008. Does that make sense
to you? Otherwise, do you know how can I finid out whether or not I
do already have a subscription and, if I do, how can I get the 2003
extensions from MS?

Thanks again. Carol.

Does that make sense to you?

Yep. Not sure it's even possible to buy Visual Studio without some flavor of
MSDN sub anymore.

"Microsoft Office Access 2003 Developers Extensions" is on Disc (DVD)
3089.1, which includes the Packaging Wizard and the Runtime Files & License.

A lot of confusion here. What you need is the runtime distribution of
Access. With Access 2002 (XP), the runtime was part of the Access
Developers XP Toolkit.

With Access 2003, the runtime was part of the retail distribution of Visual
Studio Tools For Office 2003
(http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Vis..._1_2?ie=UTF8&s=software&qid=1206736389&sr=8-2
).

The retail box of VSTO2003 (no longer sold by MS) did have - beside VSTO
2003 - a copy of the Access 2003 runtime and a copy of Visual Basic .NET
2003. I speak here about the retail version of VSTO2003 because the
downlodable version of VSTO2003, available from MSDN, don't have the runtime
(available separately).

The successors of VSTO-2003 (VSTO for VS2005, VSTO-2005 SE and VSTO-2008)
are to be used with Visual Studio 2005 or 2008 and are available altogether
with Visual Studio when you buy a copy of VS2005 or 2008 but they are not in
any way a runtime of Access. The confusion stand up from the fact that the
runtime for Access 2003 was sold *with* VSTO 2003; even if there is no any
direct relationship between these two products.

I don't know what version of MSDN you have bought; so I cannot tell you if
it contains a copy of the runtime for Access 2003 but if it doesn't, your
next step would probably be to use the runtime for Access 2007, which is now
available free of charge and can be downloaded from Microsoft:

Other possibilities would be to buy a retail (or boxed) copy of Microsoft
Visual Tools for Office 2003 (on eBay?) or to get one of the MSDN
subscriptions with the Access Developer Extensions:

Thanks Sylvain and George -- I'll investigate the subscription angle
and will download Access 2007 runtime to see if it will fit our needs.
