Access 2002 & Access 97

Brett S.

Problem: the command MSACCESS opens Access 97 instead of
Access 2002.

Details: My WinXP computer at work has both Access 97 and
Access 2002 installed. Now that a certain database has
been converted up to Access 2002, all users now will be
using Access 2002. I have edited my "open with" pointers
in Exploring to open .mde and .mdb files in Access 2002.
All databases open properly in Access 2002 from their
shortcuts. Yet when I use a command line containing
MSACCESS (for instance, in customized toolbars or icons
in third-party software) that command opens Access 97.
How do I edit the registry or whatever so that MSACCESS
command opens Access 2002?

Thanks for your help.

You'll need to use the full path to the version of MSAccess.exe that you want.

Try either determining the DOS names of the folder (probably
C:\progra~1\Micros~1\) or putting quotes around the path name with spaces.

Hi Brett,

Supplementing what others have said: a bare "MSACCESS" will launch the
first MSACCESS.EXE that Windows finds. AFAIR it begins by looking in the
current directory, and then tries every directory in the current Path.

Take a look at the PATH environment variable (in Windows 2000 it's in
Control Panel|System|Advanced|Environment Variables|System Variables).
If the Office 97 folder is in the path, remove it. Then add the folder
that contains the Office XP version of MSACCESS.EXE (on my system it's
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\).
