access 2000 counting check boxes

I am trying to count the checked boxes in a data field called "assest issues"
the qry that I use works as long as there is at lest one check mark in the
data base. If there are no boxes check the qry gives me the total of all the
check boxes in the data base, and I want it to show a zero. I've tried to
the the qry "=COUNT(field) and in the Criteria put YES but I can't get that
to work. Can you help me?--
