Question about microsoft backup utility(this utility not included by
default): it does not compress files(zip or rar), just save it in .BKF
format? Is this format uncompressed? Is there better 3rd party alternative
utilities, that compress files?

YES.
I partition my drive into os/program files and various data volumes.
Imaging is best for os partition, I use bootitng from terabyteunlimited.com.
For data there are many file backup utilities, imaging can be used but
you also need differnetial backup else your're backing up the same
unchanged files many times. I use disk2disk but to backup directly to cd
media you need to use udf.
A lot of people are opting for external hd.

Backup methods that do NOT compress files nor save them in a proprietary
format are recommended.

Use the backup utility in the program such as WinRar or Winzip and create a
shortcut to that and then schedule it. In that way you get the files backed
up and compressed.

Like in winRar choose the files and click add, then click on profiles button
and choose save as, name the profile and click "Save archive names" and "Save
selected file names" and "Immediate execution" and "Create shortcut on
desktop". Schedule the desktop shortcut. This can be different in different
versions.

They don't have backup programs but the "Add and update files" option of the
add dialog just works like incremental backup. I gave you the example of
WinRar
