ABIT rx300 PCIe bios flash?

P

pc

I've an ABIT RX300 PCIe on my ASUS A8N-SLI-Deluxe mainboard. I bought
the RX300 because it was inexpensive (I'm not a gamer"), was PCIe, and
had a DVI output.

Since the system was built two years ago, 1 boot of 3 or so gives me
an error that the video card has "not initialized", or something like
that.

I was contemplating flashing the BIOS, but the tool that came on the
CD with the card says it doesn't support the card (GO! ABIT!
GO!!!!)

I can't find a thing at the ABIT site, or the AMD/ATI site for the
X300 chipset.

Any clues? I'm thinking of upgrading to one of the cheap Opteron 180s
that are floating around, but not if the problem is the mainboard.

Is this BIOS flashable? If so, where to find the bits and tools?

Got new RX300SE BIOS??

"COMPUTER FAILED VGA TEST" ==> I've gotten this boot up/ BIOS message
intermittently since my complete system was new. The system continues
to boot w/o video support, but is fairly useless w/o it.

I've an ASUS A8n-SLI-DELUXE, bios 1805. RX300 bios is
008.015.093.0000, the original. Operton 185 (Athlon 3200+ had same
problem.) 4x512 matched, supported Corsair RAM running dual channel @
400 MHz.

I'm running ATI graphics driver 6.14.10.6451, the latest version that
doesn't complain about "INVALID CRT TYPE" in the system event log
(older video driver and MOBO BIOS versions still failed the boot up
test.) I've got a ~650 watt seasonic PSU. I changed it out from a huge
ROSEWILL, hoping it would solve the problem, but it hasn't. I've tried
the video card in both x16 slots. I've tried about everything but
flashing the video BIOS.

I'm hoping a later video card BIOS will fix the problem. I've got the
flash tools on the product DVD, but can't locate compatible BIOSes for
the card on the ABIT site. Do they exist? If so, where? If not, are
the ATI BIOSes compatible? Help! Cecil! Help! I really hate to shell
out for a new video card.

Unlike motherboards, the video card BIOS is almost never meant to be
updated. Give it up.

Some older video cards have the DVI port as an afterthought. Do you still
get the same problem with the monitor plugged into the analog VGA port?

A few other things to try if problem happens regardless of which port you
plugged the monitor into:

- Make sure your RX300 is placed in the blue PCIe slot.
- Make sure the card is well-seated, and not interfering with an open DIMM
lever.
- Make sure the SLI switch card on the mobo is inserted for single-card
mode.
- Don't plug a power connector into the 4-pin Molex next to the PCIe slot.
- Go into the mobo BIOS and make sure:
"PEG Link Mode", if the option exists, is OFF
"Assign IRQ to VGA", if the option exists, is ON

The A8N-SLI was a complex, expensive behemoth back in the day. Why did you
choose it, only to pair it up with an el-cheapo Radeon X300?

Thanks for your reply.

ABIT used to have BIOS upgrades for their video cards; I've done a
half dozen others over the years. The CDROM that came with the card
has BIOS and flash tools. I'm surprised you haven't experienced such a
thrill.

The problem has manifested itself with both analog and video
connections, ever since the system was new. I bought this POS video
card because it does what I need -- I don't play games; I write
software, and some other demanding tasks. I upgraded the MOBO BIOS in
preparation for the Opteron I just bought, and didn't get an error for
the entire week before installed the new processor. That's rather
suspicious.

I'll check the two BIOS settings. Why have you noted to not plug the
power connector in? I don't remember it's form factor, but I do
recall that the card would not work w/o it being plugged in. I've
checked everything else you mention, a dozen or more times.
