A8N SLI Premium - SATA issues

Hi,

I am having issues with my machine freezing during disk transfers.
Something as simple as copying a small file or even deleting a file
will occasionally lock the machine solid.

I have two Seagate 7200.8 200GB SATA drives attached to ports 3 & 4 of
the onboard nvidia sata controller. I've tried various port combination
with little effect, using ports 3 & 4 so far are the most reliable.

Can I use the onboard Sil 3114 for normal single hard drives? (no raid
of any kind)

The system will run memtest+ & prime95 for hours without errors and
freezing only occurs during disk writes - the last crash happen when an
installer was deleting its temporary files!

I have only the MS drivers installed, no Nvidia drivers for
IDE/SATA/RAID (I don't have the nvidia firewall crap installed either)

Cool & Quiet is disable everywhere in all its forms. I am not
overclocking, according asus probe the cpu temps sits at 52oC at full
load, chipset @ 29oC

Suggestions?

Asus A8N-SLi Premium nForce4 SLi
AMD A64 X2 3800+
Corsair 2GB DDR XMS3200C2PT TwinX
Sapphire ATI Radeon X800 GTO² 256MB
2x Seagate Barracuda 7200.8 NCQ 200GB ST3200826AS SATA 8MB Cache
Seasonic S12 600W
Liteon DVD-ROM

I would recommend the Nvidia drivers. No Probs here!

hi

install nvidia drivers (as Dirk Pajonk said) and also consider cool'n'quiet drivers from amd
+ the bios support, will lower your cpu temp! this mb is very fast between differnt
powerstages, you will not notice.

sil chip can be used to serve single hd's, just set it to jbod!

Ok, I'll try the nvidia its just that 99% of posts about trouble with
SATA involve the nvidia drivers.

The CPU temp is fine if slightly high using both cores & the stock HSF.

C&Q is another thing reputed to serious screw the system. Personally I
don't see the point of it anyway in anything other than a laptop.

It saves power, and allows lower fan speeds, reducing noise. Given the
price of electricity these days (and the lack of it, in parts of the USA
at certain times!) maybe it's a good idea. Turning the heating down
works too.
