A8N-E and Maxtor DiamondMax 10 200GB

Phil

Motherboard: Asus A8N-E (nForce4 Ultra)
HDD: DiamondMax 10 200GB 6B200S0 SATA150

HDD is not recognised by the BIOS. Another (Hitachi) SATA HDD works
fine, and the Maxtor is recognised by another motherboard. Anyone else
having problems, or success, with this combination?

Asus support says get a "fireware" upgrade from Maxtor.

Maxtor support says no firmware upgrade for the drive, get a new BIOS
from Asus. Only BIOS listed on the ASUS site is the same (1.0.0) as came
with the board.

Any advice or ideas?

The latest bios for your board is 1003.003. It was just posted yesterday.
Don't know if it will fix your problem though.

I had a problem with bios revision 1003 and my Maxtor Diamondmax 10. I have
not had any problems with bios revisions 1004 and 1006.

Try a different sata cable. Some cables just seem to have a looser conection
than others.

It's very unlikely to be a cable problem.

I have two Maxtor DiamondMax 10 300GB's with my A8N-SLI. Any BIOS
higher than version 1003 (they are up to 1006 now) will NOT see both
drives. The BIOS won't even report which drive is missing if I remove
one of the two drives (either way, it reports the same one as missing).

If I go to a higher BIOS version, both drives will sometimes show up
fine through one or two reboots, then all of a sudden POST can't find
one of them.

The only way for me to get both drives back is to burn back to BIOS
1002, then update to 1003, with a CMOS reset. I.e. going directly back
to 1003 doesn't work.

I know you are talking about the A8N-E, and I am talking about the A8N-
SLI, but I think we are all looking at a common problem here with
compatibility between these boards and the DiamondMax 10...

Note that I also have various other drives on this system, on both SATA
controllers, and they all work fine...

Contact Maxtor.
Apparently others have, and Maxtor have send firmware upgrades to fix this
problem with their SATA drives.

Thanks - I did this, and since updating the drives with Maxtor's
firmware, I can run 1006 just fine. It was a nightmare getting the
firmware burnt, though... (see my other post in this group)

I contacted Maxtor and they said there was no firmware update available. :(
Any more details on the firmware update before I get back to Maxtor?

Thanks.

I contacted Maxtor by email, explained my problem, and they emailed back
in a few hours with the firmware. Note that they didn't know what
firmware I already had, and they didn't call the firmware they sent me
"new". But, of course, I told them that I have two 300GB DiamondMax10
drives. (This is model number 6B300S0)

The file they sent me was called BANC1BMO.

Hi, if the firmware update helped you, can you upload the BANC1BMO firmware
update please? I have the firmware BANC1B70 now and maybe the update can
help me too. Thanks.

As posted in another thread, I managed to get my DiamondMax 10 200GB
6B200SO working with the latest ASUS beta BIOS.

BTW, ASUS seem to have had no problems with BANC1BMO firmware revision
disks. I don't know the firmware revision, but the disk label contains
"BANC1980", which I guess could be the firmware.

I suggest trying the latest beta BIOS first, as it seems to be less
hassle than getting the new firmware onto the drive. Good luck.
