a7n8x (not dlx) sata and raid problem

Fred Scharmann

my a7n8x (no other extentions such as deluxe) when it boots checks for sata
(which it can not find since it does not exist), boots very slowly looking
for SCSI, (which does not exist) and always puts a SCSI back in the device
manager after I remove it.

The a7n8x does not support sata or raid, why does it keep looking for it?

I can not find any place in the bios to turn that function off.

ASUS has not responded to my emails.

I really need your help.

During the boot, I do not want it looking for sata and scsi's.

Thanks

Note: boot time for Win98SE is about three minutes!!!!!

Is the boot order in the BIOS Advanced Features section setup correctly
for you drives?

Something like ....
First Boot Device [Floppy]
Second Boot Device [CD-ROM]
Third Boot Device [HDD-0]

Unless someone flashed it with the Deluxe BIOS, which I would think is
impossible. ;p

I just used the board as it came a few weeks ago. I will have to check and
see. Wouldn't it be something if they shipped with the wrong bios?

The raid on the deluxe is disabled by changing a jumper on the motherboard.
That jumper does not exist on this board.

The settings are set for floppy, hhd, and then cdrom.

It would be a big screw up for ASUS but the more likely senario would be
that the local dealer did it or that the board was baought and returned
after the customer screwed it up. Did the box appear to be factory sealed
?

Weird! I would clear the cmos, then flash it to one of the non-dlx BIOS
and see if it takes it, if that didn't do it suspect the board has a
problem amd RMA it for an exchange/replacement.

btw, I have the non-dlx version also, it came with BIOS 1003, it ran
fine but I flashed it to 1004 when that BIOS was released just so I
could see the "DUAL CH Ram" displayed on boot up. ;p

Good Luck,

It came in from a west coast dealer and was wrapped in bubble wrap and did
have everything it should along with it. It really looked like a virgin
board the way it was packed including the looks of the manual and everything
with it.

I will have to look into flashing the bios. If I selected to have it go
back to default settings, I wonder is that would get rid of the part that is
looking for sata and raid!

At the start of boot, it is looks for the sata drives, but it says it can
not find any. I am assuming that the bootup is taking so long because the
device manager says there is a scsi, and there isn't any.

Was the board in a sealed anti static bag ? I don't recall any bubble wrap
in mine but they may add it for shipping.
I have seen reports of counterfiet ASUS boards out there but dont know if
any of them are true. You could download the bios from the board to disk
and check it out with CBrom and see if its the correct one or try Sisoft
Sandra and see what it reports. Sisoft reports mine as an Asus A7N8x Deluxe
ACPI bios rev 1006. (I have the Deluxe board).

Are you sure you didnt get a Deluxe by mistake ? It would be pretty
obvious having the extra connectors.

It was in a sealed anti-static bag.

I will check the bios and probably flash an update to it and see if it
helps.

This board is not a deluxe, because it lacks the conectors of the deluxe.

I looked into the bioses. You can easily tell them apart by just looking at
the size. The Non deluxe has a 256k bin. and the deluxe uses a 512k bin.
