For some reason when I try to do a clean install of XP when it gets to the
"starting windows" screen just before the choose partition screen my system
just shuts down. I was wondering if anybody has experienced this and if
there is a fix? This also happens with 2000pro.

A7N8X Deluxe (BIOS rev 1007)
XP 3000+ (barton)
2x256 megs Corsair 3200LL
2x80gig Seagate SATA HD's (RAID 0)

If you're installing onto the SATA drives you'll be needing to press F6 and
install the driver when the setup is starting.

Have you confirmed that your ram is stable with memtest86? (it should be,
but worth ruling out)

Ben

Thanks for the reply Ben. I did the F6 thing. I also tried to run memtest86
lastnight but the computer kept powering off like it does when trying to
install XP. A friend suggested it might be the PS. Is a 350watt Antec True
Power sufficient to run this setup? Any help would be appreciated.

Another common cause is putting the heatsink on backwards, the heatsink
and socket have a step to them, if not matched up the CPU slowly warms
up to the point it gets so hot the ASUS COP shuts the system down to
safe the CPU from burning up.

just a thought, but it's a common mistake by first time AMD/newbie
builders, if you just so happen to be one. ;p

I was kinda thinking the same thing so I pulled the HS just to make sure.
Unfortunately, the thing can only go on in one direction or the copper shim
will sit on the socket itself. I guess I'll upgrade HS's and see what
happens. Thanks

It doesn't even have to be on backwards. Many heatsink retaining mechanisms
will allow you to make the mistake of putting the heatsink on and allow it
to be above the step, rather than seated up against it.
