a7n8x Deluxe mobo dead?

Hi,

Last night I transferred all my hardware to a new case. Everything
went smoothly until I tried to boot up. I turned the power switch on
and for about 5 seconds it powered up (mobo light up, ram light up,
all the fans turned on) and then it shut down immediately. I'm
assuming that it didn't even try and load bios cuz i didn't hear any
beeps before the shutdown.

My first thought was that the board was shorting out. So, I removed
everything and pulled mobo from case and tried powering up again with
just the cpu, ram and video card. It powered up and then shutdown
again!

I have a 400w vantec power supply, so there's enough juice. I guess
that wouldn't be a factor since i didn't upgrade/change anything.

My next thought was bad memory. So, i removed the memory modules. I
powered up, the mobo beeped of course, but then shut down again.

My last resort was to pull everything and then power up the mobo by
itself. Not sure if that was ok, but at this point i had nothing to
lose.

Powered up just the mobo and it stayed powered up. No beeps, nothing.
Which was odd cuz i thought it would beep if there was no cpu, ram or
video card.

Last step i made was to put the cpu back in without anything else. I
did so and powered up and the mobo shut down again!

Ok, so here comes the question...

What the hell is problem? Did I fry the mobo or cpu?

My feeling is the cpu died. But it was working fine before I
transferred everything. Actually, all the hardware was working
perfectly before I transferred everything!

Need some help ASAP! Thanks in advance.

The CPU would be my best guess as I had a computer I put together for
a friend display the same symptoms. It was a new XP2700+ that lasted
about 3 days before it died. I replaced the CPU and it was fine.

What's the condition of the CPU heat sink? Does it have a solid contact with
the CPU? Are you using thermal paste? Could be an overheating problem
causing the shutdown...

I gotta ask, did you observe cautious static grounding protection
measures? E.g., did you have your body grounded at all times when
handling any of the boards or CPU? A tiny static shock that is not
detectable to the human touch is sufficient (several hundred volts
actually) to permanently damage the sensitive electronics, sdrams or
the CPU in a computer. Were you doing this project while standing or
walking around on carpet? I've seen a demonstration where a person
holding a fluorescent tube and shuffling their feet on the carpet
caused the tube to illuminate with brief light flickers (gotta turn
the room lights out to see this phenomenon usually).

Something you handled has been static damaged most probably, imho.
For best results, I use a static grounded wriststrap, which costs
about $12 but well worth it when it comes to peace of mind when
handling expensive components.

well I'll ask the stupid question. <:)
Is the power switch sticking? If so that could cause the problem you are
describing. <g>
I hope it is as simple as that! Or maybe you have the wiring wrong?
good luck,
dave

First of all check if your power supply is not at 220 volts, often new
power supply come on 220 default.

the new case is was transferring the hardare to is a koolance water
cooled case. I verified that the cpu cooler was seated correctly. But
to just verify that it wasn't the cpu cooler i put my old heat sink on
there. and it still had the same problem.

But it sounds more and more like a cpu issue though. If anyone else
has some advice please feel free to respond this post. thanks in
advance.

I had a non deluxe version (an early one) just up and die on me. My
advice pull the cpu and see if it works in another board before you buy
a new one. By the way I did not, and now have a spare cpu and a dead mobo.
I suspect its the board and not the cpu, only cp I had go bad was one I
really pushed had ocing it, my fault.

I was working on hardwood floors. And I should've been using a
anti-static wrist band. It's definitely not the power switch being
stuck or the power supply set to 220.

I actually got the pc to power up without shutting down immediately.
Unfortunately, now it won't post. No beeps or nothing. I beginning to
think that it might be a heat problem. maybe the cpu cooler is not
making enough contact. I'm kinda at a loss here.

Take the mobo out of the case put it on cardboard or at worst a
newspaper ... disconnect all periphs apart from keyboard and mouse boot
.... if successful add hard drive (nothing else). This will eliminate
all of the other things such as shorting on the case that can sometimes
go wrong.

The setup stays powered on with no cpu installed. Plug in speakers to
the audio jack and you will hear the repeating message CPU not
installed.

Have you examine the cpu for signs of damage?

Do you still have the option to test the cpu with original setup?

Do you have another tested cpu to try with current setup?

i forgot about the mobo's voice reporter. I will do that.

i tried using the old heatsink and fan and it did not do anything.
everything was powered up and led's were on but no beeps, nothing.

I did check the cpu. it looks like there is some damage on the edges
of the chip. most likely from the heatsink grinded on it. that
obviously is not a good sign.

i guess if the motherboard was fried it wouldn't even power up right?
So, i guess the cpu is the culprit? either way it's the most
frustrating upgrade i ever made!

Okay, he's an obvious thing you haven't mentioned (at least, I don't
think you have). Did you try unplugging, removing the battery,
jumping the cmos as suggested on page 21? I've had my mb die many
times over the past few days as I've been working on my overclocking.
This works every time (knock on wood).

If this doesn't work, I've actually heard people suggest that you lay
the board on tin foil! Then put it back and and try it again. Hey,
if you've already fried the board, what do you have to loose?
