A7N-VM probs

Got a new computer day before yesterday.
Asus A8N-VM m/b (BIOS 0506) , Athlon64 3200+ (Cooler Thermaltake TR2-M14),
512MB (1 stick) CL2.5 Twinmos, 250GB WD2500JB, LiteOn SOHW-1633 DVD+/-RW,
WT KM06 case w/ Macron MPT-350P 350W PSU.

Install of XPhome(SP2) went OK, with Asus drivers on the accompanying CD,but
then the problems began..

1. USB ports won't work.
I have a 128MB stick and a Q-Tec external HD case w/ 80GB Seagate in it.
Both are seen and recognized in both Explorer and DiskManagement,
but when I try to access either in Explorer, " failed due to I/O-device
error".
Same happens both on the front of the case and on the back connectors
(mobo).
Both the stick and the external HD works OK on my old computer,
be it on the USB1.1(integral) or USB2.0( with card) ports.

2. Network doesn't work OK.
If I connect a cable to the integral NIC RJ-45 connector and to my
ADSL-modem Zyxel P645R, it works.
If I connect that same cableor any other I that have, to a newly bought
router (D-Link DI-704P),
any port, it says "Cable not connected", and of course no function.
That same cable, or any other I that have, works on any port on the
DI-704P with my old computer.

For both problems I have tried everything I know, BIOS upgrade (AFUDOS),
driver updates (from ASUS website), at least 3 reinstalls etc..
Drivers: Chipset driver 8.22 from either Asus or nVidia, and 8.1.8.5 for the
GF 61x0
XP pacthed all the way

Any ideas why ??????

As I haven't got other equipment to test with, for now the machine is going
back to the shop to let them have a look

(and no, it wasn't an expensive computer, 549eur + XPhome)
(my old machine is an Athlon 1.2GHz (T-bird), 512MB, GF2MX2, 200+120GB,
cheapo NIC with a RealTek RTL8139-series controller, and a Codegen Noble
ATX8012 case,
Q-Tec 4-port USB2-card)
And as said, here the net works connected to any port on the D-Link or
straight to the Zyxel

OK, it was at the shop.
While testing USB ports, first 2 devices worked as they should, but the 3rd
gave the symptoms I told about.
At them, the network port worked as expected, but as ALL USB ports gave the
same behacior, the swapped mobo...

Got it back, connected it, and also the net worked, so there was something
funky about that too....

Now it works, with the new mobo..
