A result of of Sasser?

I recently had the Sasser worm and got rid of it but am still having
problems. Sasser showed up after I had taken my laptop home from
being cleaned. I am writing this post from my sister's
MAC because for some reason IE won't let me access the microsoft
site. I keep getting this strange "flashlightsearch" finder page which
leads nowhere. No matter how many timesI reset my Internet Browser
to opent with the default VAIO page, that strange site seems appearing.
I suspect a virus or two or three.

All my music files have vanished.
Wordpad disappeared about a week ago. System Restore produced no
result.
Data CDs burned by my computer work right after burning them. When
I got my computer back from the shop, I tried accessing the data on
the CD with my computer but it did not work. Now no computer will
read the CD.

If this is the result of a virus or just my own negligence (or both), I don't
know. Does anyone have any information on how I can begin to resolve
these problems?

Thank you.

You do have antivirus on your computer, right? Is it thoroughly up to date?
Did you run a full system scan with it? Have you downloaded and used both
Ad-Aware http://www.lavasoftusa.com/ FREE and SpyBot Search & Destroy
http://www.spybot.info/index.php?page=home FREE? Suggest you do.

Then come back and tell us what you have found!

Sounds more like the W32.gaobot or one of its variations which contain a
long list of sites that you won't be able to connect to. Go to:

http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.gaobot.removal.tool.html

If you can't get to that site to download the removal tool, then edit the
Hosts file with Notepad, so you will be able to get to the above site. How
to:

For Windows XP:

Click Start, and then click Search.
Click All files and folders.
In the "All or part of the file name" box, type:

hosts

Verify that "Look in" is set to "Local Hard Drives" or to (C:).
Click "More advanced options."
Check "Search system folders."
Check "Search subfolders."
Click Search.
Click Find Now or Search Now.
For each one that you find, note its location. (This is displayed in the "In
Folder" column.)
Right-click each file, and then click "Open With."
Deselect the "Always use this program to open this program" check box.
Scroll through the list of programs and double-click Notepad.
When the file opens, delete all the entries in the Hosts file except for the
following line:

127.0.0.1 localhost

Close Notepad and save your changes when prompted.

As with any virus/worm removal, be sure to disable and then enable System
Restore to flush all the Restore Points which might contain a virus/worm.
Antivirus programs can't gain access to the Restore Points, ergo they can't
remove viruses/worms or Registry changes made by them in Restore Points.
