"A referral was returned from the server"

I am trying to delete a corrupt entry in my AD database. I have tried to
use ADSI adit and ldap.exe to remove the attribute but it wont delete, it
keeps coming back with the error: " A referral was returned from the
server". Does anyone know what this means and how I can force the deletion
of an Active Directory object?

What are you trying to delete, first of all?

Do you mean metadata cleanup? If so unfortunately I've tried that and it
gave the same error. Are there any other facilities in ntdsutil that would
solve my problem?

If you're getting that error in NTDSUtil, I'd bet dollars that you're
typing something incorrectly or trying to delete things in the wrong
order. Can you type here what you're typing there?

i'm running into the same problem. i removed a child domain from our win2ksp4 domain, and ntdsutil will not remove the child domain. neither will the other half-dozen approaches i've tried. even hacked into regedit to see if there was anything worth removing. any more suggestions? that last ms website link returned a message stating "article not found".
