A question for the more knowledgeable...

I have a Maxtor 200 GB, 7200 rpm, EIDE, 8 MB cache new hard drive. I
installed it in a Flash external drive enclosure that is set up for USB 2.0
and Firewire. Regardless of where I placed the jumper on the back of the
hard drive (no instructions included), the Dell Dimension 4550 would not see
the USB drive.

Is there an incompatibility between the EIDE protocol and the Ultra's
electronics? TIA

Sounds like it needs formatted, first. Even IDE and SATA drives aren't
detected by Windows until you run the MaxBlast software to set the drive
up. Since you are building the drive, it may even be necessary to connect
it internally via an IDE connection to format it, then assemble it in your
case and hook it up.

Machine looks like its a couple of years old or so on the web. I would
suggest maybe a BIOS upgrade to try and enable it to be seen. I had to do
this for my 160gb drive to see all the availabe disk, although i did pick up
some. Does your machine detect other removable media when connected, like
the USB memory drives, or digital camera etc ?

Possibly install it temporarily internally, just to see if it can be
detected that way.

Ed:
I would guess that Ruel's observation that you haven't yet formatted the
drive is indeed the root cause of your problem. Obviously you must do so
before the system recognizes the drive. I would only add that if that is
the problem, you can use XP's built-in Disk Management utility to partition
& format the drive. (I assume you're going to be formatting NTFS). There's
no need to use any third-party partitioning-formatting program (even if it
is the one provided by the disk's manufacturer). XP's DM utility is simple &
straightforward to use and does its job well. There should be no need to
remove the drive from its enclosure and install it internally just for the
purpose of partitioning/formatting.

Thanks Anna, Ruel, Art and everyone for your answers.

Yes, I do not think the drive is formatted. It hadn't occurred to me that it
would not see it unless it was.

I'm using XP Home, so I'll give the Disk Manager a try. Thanks again.

Thanks, guys. That was the problem. After it was formatted, it worked
perfectly.
