a pasted graphic in PP shows in slides but not main slide

I copied and pasted a graphic from Paint to PP 2003. The graphic shows in the
slides column on the left side, but not in the main window (in the middle of
the screen). I deleted the PP file and tried again with a new PP file, with
no luck.

What's happening here, and how do I fix this?

Save the image to file, then insert image from file is a lot better than cutting and pasting.
