A network error occurred while attempting to read from the file...

Got the following: A network error occurred while attempting to read from the
file: C: ...WindowsDefender.msi
Even after downloading and installing it twice and after a reboot.
[I paused 'ActiveVirus Shield while trying to install it and still no go].
A google search produced no results (2 actually saying simply, "This is not
a WindowsXP problem...post somewhere else) and neither did one here. How
could this be? Certainly I'm not the only one with this problem.
Advice please

Tell us a little more?

What is the nature of the network, if any, that this system is connected
to--is this a home machine, or one in a business?

It would appear that the path to WindowsDefender.msi doesn't involve a
network.

Has Windows Defender been installed on this system previously? Might the
install source of an older installation have been a removable drive of some
kind, or a network connected drive?

Hi Bill
and thanks for your help

My OS is Windows XP home SP2 running on an AMD Athlon 35000+
It is a home computer. Was defender installed preciously? Maybe. I say maybe
because a few months ago I reformatted my hard drive and can not remember if
i had installed it after the reformat. However, i would thing it was
installed since Defender thinks it is. I say thinks it is because during
installation I am given a window which asks to 'reinstall' it.

Was the previous installation fro a removable drive? No, but I do have 2
actual physical hard drives (different brand names as well) and if it was
installed from one or the other I wouldn't be able to tell bou.

thanks again

Thanks - Here's what I think is needed:

You will need to download the Windows Installer cleanup tool, install it,
run it, and remove Windows Defender (and perhaps any listing for definitions
related to Windows Defender.)

Remove just those 1 or 2 Windows defender related items, and then re-try the
install.

I would recommend uninstalling the cleanup tool after you are done--it can
be dangerous, and it is a little too accessable in the menus for my comfort
level.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301

This KB article describes the tool, and has a link, about halfway down, to
download it.

You download the installer, run it to install the tool, find the tool in the
start menu, run it, and it will present you with a list of items you can
remove. Remove just the Windows Defender items, as I mentioned above.

I think this will take care of the issue--sorry it is so complicated.

thanks Bill

it occured to me (why didn't i think of it b4?) that if the tool would have
it displayed then perhaps Windows Add/Remove programs would have it as well.
And it did. Strangely though the program did not appear on the start menu or
elsewhere hence my wanting to install it in the 1st place.

Anyhow thanks for the trouble.

Have a nice week

Far better than using the cleanup tool. Glad that worked!
