A Good Free Anti-Virus Program

I was using NOD32 which seemed to work well-enough but wasn't very user
friendly for less than advanced users. When my year expired, I decided to
try one of the free programs instead of renewing NOD32 for close to $30. I
downloaded Avast. It seems to work OK and even found a few viruses in the
Archive files that NOD missed or wasn't configured to catch. My problem
with Avast is that I'm using a dial-up ISP and, with Avast, browsing the
Internet, opening web sites, downloading, etc., is very slow. My system is
somewhat slow to begin with and, with Avast, it has become even slower.
Is there any other free virus program that's fairly user friendly and
doesn't slow down Internet browsing or downloading very much? Would
appreciate any advice?

Since you are using Outlook Express as your newsreader, use the 'Find'
function to locate messages posted to this newsgroup. Click on the 'Find'
button and enter [ free ] (without the brackets) in the subject line and
click on the 'Find Now' button. There have been over three hundred messages
posted here in the last year and more than 100 in the last 30 days; almost
all related to free antivirus applications.

That is a good start toward finding answers to your question. Or you can
just wait for people to repeat themselves.

By the way, I would guess that there are NO well known antivirus
applications that noticeably slow down Internet browsing.

You could disable Avast Network, Web and Mail shields. Leave the Standard
shield active. You can experiment by right clicking on the Avast systray icon
and pausing the providers. Stop them permanently with the "On-Access
Protection Control" when you're satisfied and they won't reactivate when you
boot the system.

If you want to try another free A-V program some people like Antivir,
<http://www.free-av.com/>. I tried it but like Avast better. YMMV

Try AVS (Active virus Shield) from AOL (yes, really). It's free and it
is a cut down version of the best av solution out there (IMHO) Kaspersky
AV. Just make sure when you are installing it that you decline to tick
the optional aol toolbar. I installed it on my sister's PC recently (I
already use the paid-for version of Kaspersky) and it was just like KAV
with a few features removed.

If you ****ed up the default configuration, it may have missed something.
More likely, it found false positives.

Go get AVG, buy it, downaload it free, peer to peer, torrents, doesnt
matter it will clean your computer right up. It;s better then McAfee or
Norton I tried both no good.
